SFG in SF Bay area

Post  garden mark on 6/10/2010, 7:37 pm

I'm new to SFG in fact all gardening, don't see much talk about SFG in SF Bay area. I'm in San Jose and in a high wind area. I would like to hear from gardners doing SFG in my area.

So I will say Hi.
I live in Castro Valley, CA.
Not too far from San Jose but not that close either.
It would be great if our SF Bay Area group can get together sometime and visit each other gardens/ perhaps dinner or something.

Yay! I'm in Castro Valley, and I'd love to meet with a SF Bay Area group. I just got certified to teach. I also looked into getting a booth at the SF Flower & Garden Show, but I would need other people to do it with me. This area has so much potential for SFG. How can we set something up?

I am originally from the North Bay Area (Santa Rosa and north) but didn't start SFG until moving here to South Dakota - known for big winds. I can tell you that the simple trellises that Mel describes in his book work well in High Winds! Below is a neighbor's patio table umbrella that got picked up and driven into my trellis with no damage or bending to my trellis structure. This was an all-nighter and I have no idea how long the wind was blasting against the umbrella into the trellis, but I had no bending whatsoever!

We tend to have moderate-high winds with high gusts pretty regularly. If you have sustained high winds regularly you may need to do a little reinforcing, or set trellises in a direction that they do not get the full force of the wind broadside, but I can tell you from experience that Mel knows what he is talking about with his simple trellis design!
