Planning for next year....yes already! :)

Post  middlemamma on 6/11/2010, 2:11 am

My husband and I are brainstorming a 2 (deep) 4 (wide) 6 (tall) 4 shelf greenhouse for the winter seed starting. Smile With grow lights. He will build it and we will have it in our Mud room, its not heated or cooled so we will add a little heater to the mini greenhouse.

I am wondering if any of you creative souls could help us think of a way to build this thing? Material ideas? Also I was thinking to put it on casters for ease of movement when needed?

I have never bought grow lights before either...will probbaly have one for each shelf...any suggestoons there? My goal is to have everything I want next year from seed...its the goal....not the rule. Smile

Here's hoping some good ideas flow this way! Smile

Hey there, MM

Okay - I have an idea.....good one, I'm not so sure...but

It kinda sounds like a small closet to me. Maybe you could find an old garage-type storage closet at a yard sale or something. Maybe you could find one at a Home Depot, Lowes, or Walmart store....a good sale price? You could somehow drill holes at the top to hang the lights (pet stores have good lighting stuff available). You could choose to keep the doors on or take them right off and somehow add plastic......I dunno; never had a greenhouse before.

Try a Goodwill or SalvationArmy...never know what they may have.

Or just build your own PVC style greenhouse - there are plans online.

Keep us posted.

I was trying to figure out the same kind of thing and then I came across this at the store.

I'm not sure if you would be able to find something similar in your area. I haven't bought it yet, so I'm afraid I can't give too many specifics beyond what you can see in the picture.

The shop lights at Wal Mart are long, about 4' (I can't remember exact length).
They are inexpensive and foks say use a warm and cool bulb for best results.
If you are going to use them, make sure your shelving is the same length.
These lights will not fit on the "readymade" rolling cart greenhouses.
This spring, I started to construct an indoor greenhouse, but the cost of the metal shelving was too high (100.00 at home depot).

Instead, I opted for the portable pop-up outdoor greenhouse. I can store tools in it too.
Few links;
metal shelving unit at home depot. I think this is the one that matches length of Wal Mart shop lights.

BUILD INDOOR GREENHOUSE. This is mostly hydroponic, but you can see shelving unit w/ lights set up too.
