Rookie SFG in SC

Post  kimbies on 3/11/2010, 2:00 pm

Hi All - yes, I've read THE book, have my shopping lists for beds & plans, calendar, etc... just waiting on payday & the weekend.
I grew up in a "long rows" household.... canning quarts and quarts of beans and tomatoes every summer - ugh. I'd rather EAT! Just tried raised beds last summer and had ok results but not great because of lack of sun. Had some work convincing hubby that we could do a 9 x 2 along a wall of the house and an 18 x 2 (!) along the garage...I'm dreaming of melon trellises and he doesn't have to sacrifice the volleyball court. We've got a long season here in Zone 7 and I'm really anxious to get started!

Hi Kimbie. How about sending a few of those long summer days up north here. We could use them

I like 2x gardens. I have two.

welcome aboard! and i'm so excited for you - you have awesome growing season! i'm zone 5 ish. . *grin*

you're going to LOVE seeing your canteloupe growing up a trellis - it's the wildest thing ever! i had great success with them by taking a qtip and cross pollinating the blossoms myself - i was worried that they wouldn't pollinate otherwise - onlyhad one plant. i got 4 canteloupe from that one pollination time! should have done it again but i got distracted with my little kids. this year i'm going to use a small artist paintbrush to do a more gentle pollination and will watch for new blossoms to repeat the process and have even more melons.

they were SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO incredibly sweet! omg amazing!

can't wait to see your gardens! Smile

welcome aboard and look forward to you posting lots!

2x beds are awesome because they're so easy to reach across. So far I have 3 - 2x beds (2 -2x10ft beds for peas and 1 2x5ft bed for ....stuff lol). Most of my lettuce, tomatoes, etc. will be in 2 x beds.

2X beds are indeed a treat. As much as I like my 4X beds I am falling in love with 2X beds especially those that I am building at Table Top height. No bending to plant or harvest. So a hardy welcome to the Square Foot Gardening forum and please ask and answer question posted here.

God Bless, Ward.

Do you suppose we ought to start a special forum for 2x lovers? I have two and their the best! One 2x4; one 2x6.

Would that be considered a rebelion? hahaha

The new bed is 4x4. Don't have an opinion yet.
