Saying hi from sunny, humid Yadkinville

Post  4beatrider on 6/12/2010, 11:40 am

Hi all. This is our first year SF gardening. We live in an area with hard-packed red clay soil and have NO tractor. (Personally, I would love to have a tractor, but can't talk my husband into it.) I am loving working in the loose soil. Fortunately, we have the space to have several boxes and have planted a pretty wide variety of veggies. This morning my 9 year old son and I sowed some seeds of some of the types of flowers that my mom used to grow. It made my heart sing!

So far everything is looking good, except we have little critters (some kind of larvae) eating holes in the leaves of the cabbage and broccoli plants. Dusted them with bug killer. Have since read on an organic website that flour also works...the larvae eat it and then swell and die. Am going to try this.

We converted our son's old sandbox into a big bed for sweet potatoes. I can hardly wait! Haven't grown sweet potatoes since I was a kid living with mom and dad who had TWO tractors. Happy gardening, y'all.

Hi and welcome!!
I used to live in Boonville. We moved to Trinity 2 years ago. I KNOW how Yadkin County's red packed soil is!! Either too hard and packed, or too wet and sticky. You will love SFGing!!
Do you have horses?
