I've got Poo!!!

Post  PeggyC on 6/23/2010, 11:58 am

Thanks to Freecycle, I'm about to leave the house to go pick up as much rabbit manure mixed with straw and sawdust as I can take. The person is a rabbit breeder and apparently has a mountain of rabbit poo.

The best thing I've learned is that it's not "hot" so it can be put straight onto the beds without composting. She said she has all ages of poo though, so I was thinking I'd get some of the older stuff that has had time to compost more? I'm going to side dress everything with it since I didn't do any compost additives after last season.

I'm just so excited to have found something free around here for my garden! Thanks for listening!!

Lucky you. I, too, heard it can go right in the garden since its mostly greenfood that they eat, alfalfa mostly.
Good luck!

Aw, Crap! (literally)

The poo pile was full of grubs. I don't know what kind of grubs and neither did the bunny lady, so I picked out the ones I saw, but I'm sure some of them are in the boxes. I put the poo in garbage bags inside diaper boxes, so if I should leave them to cook in my shed all summer and not use the poo till fall, that's feasible. Screening it isn't possible since I don't have a system set up and I'm not going to spend money to screen free poo!

What would you do with free grubby poo?

Thanks!

I would think that if you tied the bags closed and left it in the sun that whatever was in there would be unlikely to last very long. And then they contribute to the compost cycle themselves.

Here's a link explaining the lifecycle. It would stand to reason that if the grubs are in the first stage, then putting the garbage bagged poo out in the sun for a couple of weeks would do them in.
