Bedframe in the front yard? . . . . gotta check this out!

Post  happyfrog on 6/25/2010, 4:48 pm

Folks, I have the oddest garden set up perhaps.

I have young children and my front/side yard gets the best sun, and it's also just a step or two from my doors to the kitchen.

So my latest trellis looks like a bedframe holding up my canteloupe and watermelon.

I've noticed that the cars driving past have started slowing to a crawl to openly gawk at this unusual lawn acqutrement. *grin*

Curious?

Check it out for yourself! Smile

Enjoy!

BettyAnn (sorry about the bold typing - my son just pushed some buttons on 'puter and it's all weird now)

Very cool! You should put a sign outside :Square Foot Garden At Work" or something. Maybe one of the suggested slogans.

So what you are saying about using a paintbrush with the melon flowers is to just tap it and this will take the place of the bees pollinating? I planted 2 canteloupe plants on the 8 ft trellis I have my pole beans on. They are just starting to climb and I noticed a few flowers today. Just lightly tap???

what i do is more of a tap, swirl, lol. sort of like an ocd ear cleaning with a qtip. . .you want to get a few grains of pollen on your paint brush - and i can't see the pollen - it's tiny stuff (esp w/o my contacts in, lol) but i trust that by going into each blossom i'm getting a little on the brush - and i just dab at each flower that way - making sure i go and get the initial flower as well. it worked great fo rme last year (and i literally used a qtip!) that using a nice paint brush is going to add a bit of finesse to my gardening. . .

and 'sides, it's fun to show the 'tools' used in sfg - it's stuff like a pencil, small hand trowel, pair of scissors, some nylon string, etc. *grin* no heavy tillers or back breaking work - after the initial blending of the mel's mix of course. . .

all i did was google hand pollination, read a bit about other folks techniques, read some books from the library and decided the gist was to get the pollen on each flower. . .and how you get it there is up to you. Smile
