Concrete mixer to mix up mel's mix?!!

Post  happyfrog on 3/12/2010, 6:28 pm

I saw a recent post in the 'you might be a sfg if you . .' thread about using a concrete mixer. . .

gonna call tomorrow to find out how much a rental is!

http://www.paisleyrental.com/ConcreteEquipment/tabid/6264/Default.aspx

Concrete Equipment (please call for prices)

  • 48" Bull
    Float (handles included)

  • 36" Power
    Trowel 5.5 hp w/combo blades

  • 48" Power
    Trowel 8 hp w/combo blades

  • 14" Gas
Cut-off saw (hand held concrete saw)

  • Walk
Behind concrete saw 13 hp wet cut

  • 14"
    Diamond blade

  • 14"
    Abrasive blade

  • 13 hp
concrete buggy 16 cubic ft capacity

  • Electric
Concrete Mixer 3 cubic ft capacity

Wouldn't that be AWESOME?!! This is a rental company here in my town. . .never would have thought of renting a mixer but gosh, this would be such a time saver - dump in ingredients, mix and pour. . .what would be easier?

anyone actually do this kind of thing? if so, how much did you pay for the rental? and what the heck is a buggy vs a mixer?

i'm thinking seriously about doing a much larger garden this year if the mixer is a real reasonable option - i could have our entire garden expansion DONE in less than 4 hours from start to finish!

That was me. I own 2 different size mixers and haven't tried it yet! I have 5 new boxes to fill, so I thought I'd drag them out to try it.

The volume rating on mixers is very misleading. The 3cf you mentioned is a common small size. It will only handle two 60 lb. sacks of cement mix. That's about one cf of concrete mix. When I've tried 3 sacks it splashes out quite a bit. I'm curious to see how much mel's mix I can get in. Like Deb suggested, wetting it down while adding materials will keep the dust down and compress the soil a bit so I can add more at a time.

The buggy is a mixer on wheels. The one you listed is 5x bigger than the small one. It has a pretty good size gas motor on it. You and your husband could lift the small one off a truck. The buggy is probably towable.

It's going to be a few weeks till I get around to mixing, but you could try it out for us first!
