First of the month updates (march)

Post  boffer on Tue 02 Mar 2010, 1:13 am

Hi SFGardeners in the PNW. I'm going to start a new thread at the beginning of each month. It's where we can all check in to see what others are currently doing and to share what we've done recently.

The weather has been decent on the weekends so my wife Liz has nearly all her spring cleaning done in the ornamental flower beds-way ahead of schedule (that's a first!)

The weather was so nice the last part of January, I planted lettuce, spinach, and rads in my cold frame-the earliest ever-they're growing but ever so slowly. I did my first pea planting last weekend, and a couple are just starting to pop up.

I still need to get some seeds planted indoors. I'm not very good at it, but I keep trying. The tomatoes get leggy regardless of how close I put the light.

That's what I've done, how about you?

We are getting the boxes built this weekend. I have two daughters that are as excited as me to get these shoots sprouting.

I missed the chance to get the logs bored for mushroom spores but I am hoping to get that going for the summer season.

I'll get some pics up here as soon as possible and sure hope your garden supplies bounty a plenty Smile

Hi Zach,

Welcome to the forum and thanks for the post. My son lives in Bothell on the west side of Nike Hill.

Was a great day today for building boxes. I look forward to seeing your pics, and would you tell me more about boring logs for mushrooms, I've never done that before.

I'm in Yelm

Garden Goodies

Post  gardening_.oncepts on Wed 17 Mar 2010, 12:47 am

I am Garden Coordinator for our little community garden..I have the pleasure of teaching gardeners to expand their understanding when it comes to gardening in our area. I am getting to plant one of the 4' x 12' raised beds with beets, peas, spinach, radish, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage for the spring season..its exciting to see how much more you can produce with SFG..I am waiting for my materials to get started with SFG certificaton.. I planted every plot I could get my hands on last year in the garden with SFG...it sure ruffled some feathers with some of the old "row gardeners"..but they are slowly warming up to the idea. Its fun to see the other gardeners catch onto this concept..and the best is them seeing what they can produce in such a small space! Bottom line is "People don't care what you know until they know that you care!" I am excited to be helping people to see that in his economy they can have food security in knowing how to produce their own organic, homegrown, fresh food.

Hi

Sorry I missed your post earlier in the month. It sounds like you're keeping busy spreading the word....one gardener at a time!

Would love to see some pictures of your community gardens.

C'mon sunshine
