My bragging tomatoes -(Boffer, beware)

Post  dixie on 7/5/2010, 12:08 pm

My grandkids are really proud of "their" tomatoes. This is an old family heirloom, seeds saved for over 100 years & passed down. No idea which of the bicolor tomatoes it is.

These are sweet with not a lot of acid. My family is from Greeneville, TN, at the TN/VA state line near Johnson City/Bristol, so they very well could be. I guess we'll never know for sure. I've compared them to catalog pictures & Georgia Streak and Hillbilly (from Virginia) look to be the closest. I just know they are good.

Incredible!!! I WOULD LOVE to buy some of your seeds.
It's even better that it's been in your family for years.
Can you give it a name, and call it your own tomato now?
You have beautiful grandchildren too!

Seeds will be for SASE, not for sale. I've got a jar fermenting now, so should have plenty.

Re: My bragging tomatoes -(Boffer, beware)

These tomatoes are on the sweet side, not very acidic. I can a lot of stewed tomatoes & I always mix them with regular tomatoes so the acid content will be enough to keep them from spoiling. They are just an excellent slicing tomato, good in pasta salads. I posted a recipe for pasta salad & it's really pretty to use the tricolor pasta with these tomatoes, German pink (pinkish red) & regular red. It's very colorful.

Dixie that tomato is awesome! That's the size I had hoped my Goliath tomato would get.
You deserve a award for your tomato so I made you one.

Please save me some seeds if you can!

Re: My bragging tomatoes -(Boffer, beware)

Post  quiltbea on 7/7/2010, 11:58 pm

Josh... you did a good thing. That tomato deserved a ribbon.
Dixie.....Your grandkids are beautiful and you're lucky to have such sweet helpers. My grandkids couldn't care less, but they love to eat the produce. Some teenagers seem to think they have better things to do that help in the garden.
I'll be watching for news of seeds in the fall and spring as well.
I hope to save several of the tomatoes I'm growing this year. I bought small 2 x 3" clear envelopes at Staples so I could send them to friends and gardeners that would like some.
I've kept all varieties at least 5' from another variety so they will breed true.
They are all organic and open-pollinated so will breed true.
I've got Rose, Oregon Spring, Brandywine, Delicious, Green Zebra, Purple Cherokee, San Margano Gigante 3 (which are large plum tomatoes), and for cherry I have Black Cherry, Matt's Wild Cherry and White Cherry.
I hope they don't all get blight and die off before I can save seeds.
