Onion failure

Post  dixie on 7/6/2010, 10:40 am

I planted my onion plants under & around my squash, big mistake. There was too much shade the tops rotted & the onions look like pearl onions. They were supposed to be the big flat ones, Texas Grano type I think. Do you think I could save them over the winter & plant in the spring, or maybe plant them now & they would over-winter?
I'm in zone 7B

Last year I was a member of a CSA, and several times during the summer I was given more onions, green and otherwise, than I could handle. Many still had the roots on so I put them back in my garden - hoping. As it turns out they did very well. I left several in all winter and had great onions this spring.
You can possibly transplant them now and still be ok for this year. They were very resilient for me.
