pumpkin vines

I've been reading on pumpkins and haven't found any info on this yet so thought I would ask all of you. If you trim the vine, say keeping it at 7-8 ft, will it still work out or does it need to keep growing? I've heard to cut the vine after a pumpkin has started growing, but what about before. It's not that I'm short on space, but mostly curious for later.

Hi doc_jh. I don't know the answer to your question, but I am curious to hear any replies. I have trimmed small sideshoots on my rampicante squash without a problem. I have avoided trimming sideshoots after they get really big (it's amazing how fast they pop out) so I don't know if sideshoot size makes a difference or not. My pumpkins are only a couple feet tall at this point, I am crossing my fingers I will get at least a few to share with the neighbors' kids.
