Doesn't look like anyone is on the board yet. Spread the word in your area of BC about SFG Can you get some publicity in a local newspaper about what you are doing with your gardens?

Maybe post a note on a library board about SFG and the Forums. Check Craigs List in your area (if you have it) for SFGers/stuff then lead them to the Forums.

Just thinking off the top of my head how you can get "neighbors" near and far to support you with SFG in your area.

P.S. ... just saw the post from Canadiangal on the Canada thread. Have you had a chance to exchange info with her?

I know I really like getting feedback from SFGers in my local area so I wish you luck.

Love to hear from you....

I'm on Vancouver Island. So far all I've done is had my husband build three 2x4 boxes with bottoms, and I planted about half of the squares on the weekend. We've been getting frosty windshields in the mornings so it might be a bit too early right now (although my daffodils are blooming and tulips are budding) - we usually do get this last kick of winter late February-ish, so it's a bit delayed this year.

What about you?

I am from Vancouver Island as well, North Van Island. Started gardening last year and loved it, just waiting for the frost to end. I think I might start some spinach and lettuce tomorrow.

I'm from BC too

Post  anne on 4/15/2010, 11:58 pm

Hi - I'm from BC too - Victoria (historic, downtown neighbourhood), to be exact. We've had a SFG for a year. We have a raised box in our front yard (it attracts lots of interest) and last year grew an abundance of greens, turnip, beets, sugar snap peas, etc. It even did well over the winter! We are just clearing out the end of the kale and turnip tops and starting to replant the squares for spring. I hope to learn lots from others on this forum.

I'm from BC (grew up in Victoria, summers on Hornby Island) -- married a Yank and now live in Utah though...can I still be part of the club?

new to square foot gardening

Post  sandra on 4/30/2010, 6:08 pm

Hi
I am new to square foot gardening, although I have been looking into it for a few years. This year I have built three 4x8 beds and one 5x8 bed. I am in Powell River BC. I am very excited and have been studying like crazy. It is so much fun.

I'm in BC too

Post  Michelle on 5/11/2010, 12:04 am

HI

I'm also on Vancouver Island. Just moved to Courtenay from Victoria. This will be my first year of veggie gardening and I'm very excited. Started most of them from seeds in Feb/March and have just moved everything into the SFG. My husband made grids for me and it looks so cool.

Cheers

Oh my goodness. There are lots of you from BC!!! We have almost enough members for our own REGiON!!! I have been a member on here for about a year.
Welcome to ALL of you. I am the Regional Host for Canada and am up in the Prince George area, smack dab in the middle of the province. Dang! I had no idea there were so many of you. Sometimes Blackrose from Ontario and myself feel like we are the only Canadians on here although a few more have joined this spring, many of them do not post very often. Organicgardeningzen, you can still be part of the group as long as you remember the words to the National anthem and post the Canadian flag smiley. Oh yeah, you have to put "eh' at the end of your sentences. LOL!

I am very jealous of those of you on Vancouver Island. Sailing in the Gulf Islands is what we like to do for our vacations. We keep our sailboat in Nanaimo and would love to move there. Our son and oldest daughter and her 4 kids live in Vancouver. Our youngest daughter and her husband live in Courtenay. That 10 hour drive is just TOO long. And I do get tired of hearing how the crocuses are finished blooming in the beginning of February. Sheesh! Listening to that gets old!

Anyway, welcome all of you. Post OFTEN so I don't get so lonely. We love pics of your gardens and everyone on here is helpful and friendly. Thank you for joining us, eh.

New to SFG Forum - Southern Interior

Post  WestLakeSquared on 4/15/2011, 11:13 am

Hi all,

I've very recently joined this forum and already enjoying the shared wisdom.

I'm a transplant to the southern interior of BC and am happily planning and preparing my first Zone 5 square foot garden.

My present Year 1 plans include one 4x4 pyramid, one 4x4 bed, four 1x2 planters, and a 3x4 salad table. The main challenge will be constructing a perimeter that will keep the marauding deer out of their new all-you-can-eat salad bar.

Nice to be among "neighbours" here. I look forward to reading your posts! Very Happy

Nice to "meet" you R'ia

Not in your Province, not even in your Country, but at least on the same side of the continent.
I certainly can sympathize with the maurauding deer , unfortunately, can't shoot 'em here. (love venison though) I used deer netting which does not look as if it is sturdy, but it proved to be very effective. I have supported it with both PVC hoops and T-Bar type fence posts. Certainly a lot less work than building a permanent fencing perimeter.

Please feel free to ask questions, we will try to help. Also, please post pictures, we I love you them.

Hi R'ia, where are you transplanted from? I'm a transplant myself, I was born and raised in Texas, but moved to BC in 1968 with my parents, then met and married my BC hubby, so here I am, I love Canada, but sure would like to bring some of that Texas heat up here for my garden. I have lots of relatives in Texas, but none of them garden, they say it is too hot and food at the store is very cheap there.

Hi there!! and welcome to the forum. Somehow I missed your post yesterday. Sad I am the Regional Host for Canada and live in Prince George. So nice to see another on here from BC. There are quite a few of us here from BC but not many who post very often.

Because I live in the city, I don't have a problem with deer. People on the outskirts of town do and my sister who lives in the Nelson area has a terrible time. As much as I love that area, I would find that very frustrating. I just got a new gardening supply catalogue from Lee Valley Tools and they had some stuff in there that looked promising.

We are happy to have you join us. Don't be a stranger here. Join in and keep me company on here. I get lonely sometimes. LOL! And post pics of your garden too. We love that.

Hi Kari!
Nice to have someone so close to me on the forum. I live in Midway, just two hours south of Kelowna. I started SFG last year with two 4x4 boxes. This year I am enlarging to six, maybe 8, 4x4 boxes. I have strawberrys in two of the boxes, I bought two blueberry bushes this year, but still don't have them planted as we got snow last week. How is the weather in Kelowna, it has been colder than most Springs here, but we have had some sun yesterday and today, so I am hopeful.
Anyway, tell us about your SFG and we like photos.

Re: Anyone in BC?

Post  WestLakeSquared on 4/24/2011, 12:16 pm

Thanks, everyone, for the warm welcome!

While this is my first full gardening season in the southern interior and my first dedicated garden area (i.e. not simply containers) in over 20 years, my experience with classic SFG dates back to 1985 when I wrestled a garden patch out of prairie gumbo. I'm really excited to have a go at the All New SFG with its many advances.

BCgarden: You're right "next door" in the Boundary -- I'm even closer to you than Kari! Very Happy
My home is Christina Lake, so we're only a bit over an hour's drive apart -- and we're even hometown neighbours. I was born in New Mexico, raised in Canada (Ontario, Saskatchewan, BC (late 60's), and in Ottawa the last 20 years).

Old Hippie: Deer right now are my greatest concern. I have complete faith in the SFG method and its ease of use; it's keeping the deer out that's on my mind. (I'm located an hour and a half SW of Nelson.) Being an Ottawa transplant, I'm well familiar with Lee Valley Tools and have already taken delivery of three garden related orders from them this year! I hope to finish initial set up and post some photos of my garden and deer perimeter later this week -- weather permitting.

tegaan: Nice to see another SF gardener in the region. Very Happy

Hi,

Kelowna has had a very cool spring too, it snowed about 3 days ago but we are getting some sunshine now. I think my hubby is going to build some boxes today. Can't wait to get everything going.

I joined the Forums yesterday

Post  Kelejan on 4/26/2011, 10:25 pm

Hi everyone in or connected to British Columbia.

I discovered this site I joined the SFG yesterday and received a very warm welcome.

I live in Castlegar, not from from Christina Lake.

We had a lovely Easter weekend here so I got down to work and redid my first 4x4 square and planted several squares and I am hoping I am not too early. but then if the frost gets them, one can always replant a few seeds.

I started last year with two 4x4 beds and added another at the end of the season, so I have two more beds to plant.
