I may have planted too deep...

Post  jjphoto on 3/13/2010, 7:47 pm

I put radishes, lettuce, spinach, etc. in the sfg last Saturday. Do the raised beds/lower soil temp slow down the germination on normally fast sprouting seeds like the radishes? Or did I plant them too deep?

I went out there and scraped a bit of dirt off with my knife and found a radish seed that had germinated so I covered it back up. Should I just wait it out or do you think I should take my knife and go gently scrape off a 1/4" or so from the squares I have all my seeds planted?

My advice is just to be patient. Mel's mix is so friable, that I think you seeds will come up just fine -- it will just take a bit longer for them to break the surface. Also, remember that soil temps have a lot to do with the length of germination. Due to a late snow fall a few days after I planted snap peas, they took a full three weeks to break the surface, but they are catching up.

Thanks for your input. We had a freak snow here on Thursday, so I bet that slowed them down some.
