Steppin on the Welcome Mat

Post  Bill SC on 7/14/2010, 9:45 pm

Hi All
My wife and I after 28 years of marriage have begun our gardening hobby. Many may be thinking this endeavor was planned, although, as it turned out we sorta plowed into the experience. What I like to think of as a natural conclusion. We are in coastal South Carolina and are home is on a corner lot pushed backed to the rear of the lot.

In the side yard (full sun 6am-5pm) we have four 4x12' boxes and one 4x4' box. Two of the 4x12 boxes are planted with flowers (Perennials) purchased from a local nursery; one 4x12 is planted with tomatoes (Early Girl, Better Boy, Roma), peppers (about 10 different kinds) and the last 4x12 is a work in progress with watermelon, cantaloupe and soon more peppers and tomatoes. The 4x4 box is planted with a bed of annual flowers. We have built three more boxes for the backyard two 2x8' and one 2x12'. The 2x12 is for pumpkins and idk another climber to hide the metal shed and the two 2x8 boxes will be planted by my son.

Now, after about 6 weeks of gardening I read Mel's book. After reading it I looked at the spacing of our plants and determined we could plant more...the remaining boxes will have grids and planted the SFG way. I'll try and post some pictures in the next few days.

Thanks for reading if you got this far.

Wow. Sounds like a great garden. Now you will have to get with the program like the rest of us and bring your camera every time you go out there so you can share the wealth!

Most of you guys must keep a camera under the dirt for quick grabbing. I'm usually so excited to get out there and harvest that I don't think of it until after I'm eating away on a tomato... over the sink... in the house!

Happy SFGing Bill! Can't wait for your pictures. I'm already jealous of everything you have planted and the size. What a Face

Bill:

Welcome. Glad you plowed into gardening and found the Square Foot way. Today Mary and I were out working in the garden and low and behold there was a weed. Pluck. Oh My, there is another. Pluck. So much for our weeding today. Gardening is such hard work! Now to get the harvesting basket.

God Bless, Ward and Mary.

Welcome Bill and wife

So glad to have you with us. SFG gardening has become a wonderful hobby and together time for my husband and I. Seems like you've already got a good handle on the process. Please introduce your wife, and keep the pics coming.
