1st year gardening...pictures!

Post  staciz on 7/16/2010, 11:57 am

This is not just my first SFG...it's my first time planting ANYTHING! I am really excited by how well it has done, despite the setbacks and failures. Thanks to all of you here for helping a newbie out along the way! (many more questions to come )

What I planted (numbers are the squares, not plants):

From seedlings I purchased:
3 bell pepper plant
5 hot pepper plants
2 tomato plants
1 snow pea
1 eggplant
1 cucumber
1 parsley
1 chives

From seeds:
2 cucumber
2 basil
1 cilantro
4 lettuce
1 sunflower
5 nasturtiums
1 onion

(alt+p)

mysterious pepper plant that grows up..one has started to turn red

waiting on this to be a red pepper, but you can see by my hand in the shot they are huge already!

another hot pepper...jalapeno i think?

i'm guessing this is a cayenne long...waiting on it to turn red

the start of my cucumbers

planted 2 different types of lettuce...we've been eating both for a few weeks now
(alt+p)
(alt+p)

i'm guessing the butterleaf is NOT supposed to look like this one?? does this mean it bolted??

snow peas that i believe met their demise with mildew yesterday

we've had a few tomatoes as of last week...got to make some yummy bruschetta using it with the basil from the garden too
(alt+p)

i guess i left out the herbs in my picture session yesterday, but the basil is HUGE and the cilantro is just coming in. (started late with those seeds).

thanks for looking!

Just breath taking !! Im not sure about the butter leaf myself, I didnt get my lettuce planted in time, waiting for fall planting. Your bells are so nice !! I like growing bells and some day want all colors Smile Cayenne can get really long, I had a prolific plant last year and they are good green and red, less heat when green it seemed. I have another two cayenne bought as a transplant and they are both loaded with long pretty cayenne waiting to be red. Sorry about your peas, Ive yet to attempt them. This is my first year SFGing and 3rd year seriously trying to garden. I am definitely happy with the SFG method I have much more success this year. Along with a few things learned about other things that wreak havoc on plants, i.e. bugs and diseases.
You have done a nice job, very encouraging with how nice everything looks!!
Happy Gardening

Are you SURE you've never planted anything before? What an amazing job you have done. I guess you are hooked now. Yes, your lettuce has bolted & that pepper looks like my Jalapenos. Thanks for posting those beautiful pictures.

Your sfg is very well organized.
I'm impressed w/ your Bell Peppers and that Sunflower
What kind of of sunflower is so short and still has such a large flower?

Thank you everyone! I giggled at the well organized comment, b/c when I was planting, I was on here begging for help in regards to where to put everything!

The sunflower was from the Target $1 spot! It was actually a tiny little pot and I put it in my son's Easter Basket. He planted the seed in a dixie cup inside (b/c he broke the little pot it came with) and we transplanted it when it was a few weeks old. It is so amazing to me to see it out there!!
