Playing hooky pays off ...

Post  Weedless_ on 7/21/2010, 10:01 pm

I had to run some errands that involved visiting county government offices. So I took a day off, because it was way too much for me to deal with Social Security, DMV, and voter registration office in one day, and then be expected to perform at work.

They are all concentrated in one spot, including Sanitation and County Extension departments. So as I was pulling out of the parking lot, I saw a permanent sign "FREE MULCH AND COMPOST" and saw a large fenced lot with a ... oh my! ... gorgeous black compost pile in a middle. This was landfill compost, it looked way too good to pass up. I wasn't sure if it's safe for edibles, so I had to look it up first.
Our county makes compost out of yard and lawn refuse, which is collected separately from household trash.
Off to home I rush, change into yucky clothes, and grab whatever containers I could find within 30 seconds.
Mind you, I just started composting my own kitchen scraps, but it will be a while before I complete a batch, so I needed some "tie over" compost for planting fall garden, and for starting my own pile nicely. I also wanted to transplant the eggplant into a larger container, so that was a very timely find.
By the time I got back, people were already swarming around that pile like ants.
So I got me about 6 cu ft of awesome compost. FOR FREE.
Ain't it grand to skip work now and then and visit your beloved government office?

Compost addiction

Post  junequilt on 7/22/2010, 1:21 pm

You're not alone, Weedless! There are many of us out there. We're quiet and unassuming, but you just never know when you might encounter a fellow composting addict. Check this out: http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/soil/msg12151902395.html

Need I say more?

You know you are an SFGer if... LOL.

And it's bad enough she posted her compost pictures, but even worse that we are all jealous.

I know what you mean

Post  ander217 on 7/23/2010, 10:34 am

I know what you mean, Chopper. These days when my husband says he'd like to see me in something hot and black I immediately think he wants me to turn the compost pile.

(The sad thing is, that's probably what he's thinking, too.)

You guys are crackin' me up. But I find that no joke is funnier than the real life Smile
I spread the compost as mulch this morning, and my eggplant is very happy it its new larger container. The compost looks so good I feel bad covering it up with straw now. But I still need to do that, because we are going on vacation soon, and I want to be sure we are mulched up to the ears, to prevent drying out.
In the entire 6 cu ft, I only found 1 piece of plastic bottle, and a couple of pieces of cardboard that didn't fully decompose. The rest was pure gold!
