Help with Bugs...

Post  buy4now on 7/22/2010, 7:18 pm

While I'm getting my supplies together to build my first 4x4, I started some plants in containers. Out of nowhere my cucumbers just started deteriorating. I sprayed milk and water to prevent fungus, and "earth Options" by raid for bugs. But these little tiny black dots are killing my cucumber leaves. I think they are mites. Not sure. But the organic pest control is not stopping them. Any ideas?

Bug?

Post  ander217 on 7/23/2010, 10:04 am

Could they be flea beetles? They are a little smaller than the ones that decimated my eggplants, but there are a several kinds of flea beetles.

I agree that they may be flea beetles. I had an infestation, and once I sprayed neem oil, they went away. I think diatomaceous earth may be another possible remedy. Both of these are acceptable organic remedies.

Much good luck - let us know how you're doing!

I have had good success with Safer insecticidal soap. Bought it at Wal-Mart. It is biodegradable and was suggested by one of the gardeners at the community gardens here. Best of luck getting rid of them !

I got the book today. tomorrow I am going to seek out neem oil. Hope this works. I will be gone next week, but when I get back I am going to get started putting the garden together. I will update when I'm done. Thanks for the advice.

i try to stay as organic with my gardening as i can and i have found that Neem oil is the best organic pest control aside from natural predators ive had awesome success with it in the past 2 seasons down here in florida. I found mine at my local (lol 7 miles away) Ace hardware store the big box's never even heard of it.

Neem Oil

Post  jenjehle on 8/1/2010, 3:53 pm

May I jump in here and ask a Neem Oil question?? I just used it recently for the first time.

How often can I apply it for PM and other pests? I seem to be smack dab in the middle of a bad outbreak of PM, ants eating my sunflowers and tomato hornworms LOVING my tomato plants, (not sure if Neem oil helps THW's but guess it can't hurt to try).

As of now, we're just picking off the THW's (5 handpicked off so far) and my kids are keeping them in a bucket as pets! Ugh! I'm like "don't be nice to those little evil destroyers of all that I've accomplished!!!!" Their response is "but they're cute".

We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one!

Thanks for your help!

Sorry, Powdery Mildew. I hate the stuff... so much so that I don't even like to "say" it, so the initials are just not as painful.

I de-coded mine, now you de-code yours!

WYSIWYG you mean? Also pronounced phonetically (WISS EE WIG). What you see is what you get. Originally, and still, a computer programmer's term.
