Do you all talk like this too?

Post  Icemaiden on 7/31/2010, 4:15 pm

Thank goodness for Google, that's all I say!

OK, I did work out from the context that SASE (Boffer wrote it) means self-addressed stamped envelope (which is, confusingly, SAE or stamped addressed envelope in UK English). It is all the DH and so on that mystifies me

I think my English stalled in about 1985 and I am way out of date. My kids speak perfect English but I think when my daughter hits Scotland next month she is going to have to update her vocabulary

Laughing I know what you mean! but.....SASE pre-dates the internet by decades!

It took me a while to figure out that DW used to be expressed as SWMBO. Somehow I missed out on the transition!

Some forums forbid text shortcuts that are so common in other formats. We don't see too much of it here so it's just easiest to ask-I do.

ooops, guess I'm guilty here of adding to this confusing language, sorry 'bout that! When I write DH I mean my "dear hubby"...and sometimes I use LOL, or "laughing out loud". Sometimes the translations are just way too difficult to figure out! IMHO...yeah, in my humble opinion!! Laughing

It's ok I have a Canadian friend who sprinkles her emails with things like this too. My question was a bit tongue in cheek but it is a good one too. DO you talk like this or is it just on posts/emails/texts?

I thought SASE was a type

Post  kiwirose on 8/1/2010, 10:02 am

laughing - I am from New Zealand originally, and we have SAE's too - I thought Boffers finger stuttered I guess it is not just my verbal skills that are getting refined in the states - even after 10 years

That's kinda funny, imagining talking like that for real...no, but when my daughter and I text we often use the little shortcuts and several, well actually many of my friends who send emails use them so I had to "learn the language" and I'm still stumped many times! I guess it would be like using the very old shorthand and adding it to a regular message...not everyone can read shorthand. Keeping up with the younger generations can be a challenge but this Grandma tries!! Thanks for calling us on this...we should just write out the words and skip all the extras...but then, we add those really cute little smiley faces and Emoticons. lol!

I was ROFLMAO (rolling on floor laughing my a$$ off) at this thread! I have to admit, though, that I frequently am puzzled by some of the abbreviations my grandkids use. (The texting culture is beyond me!)

Seriously, though, no we generally don't verbalize in these abbreviations. And no, Boffer wasn't 'stuttering' ... SAE is a self addressed envelope, and SASE is a self addressed STAMPED envelope - to clarify for those who don't realize that the idea is that there should be no cost to the person sending seeds (or whatever else)... though most of us would naturally put the stamp on the SAE.

I aim to amuse

Actually, in UK English SAE is stamped addressed envelope - we just assume that it is addressed as well! So that is the same idea, no cost to the person doing the posting (that would be mailing to you ).

Two nations one language etc etc

what you see is what you get

the actual pictures and words, rather than the code defining them

This is the code for my post.

If I clicked the circled button, this edit box would be in WYSIWYG mode.

I'm sorry, I think my pictures might be confusing. But, while you're writing a post, if you switch back between the code view and WYSIWYG view (using the circled button), you'll begin to understand. Code view is easier for me to use when trying to put text and multiple pictures in a post.

Lavender.. don't know if you'r serious or not.

Write your own name and address on a #10 envelope, add a stamp in the right-hand corner, fold it into thirds and stick it into another #10 envelope with the name and address where you want it mailed. Seal, add stamp and mail.

@ Icemaiden : No, we generally don't talk like that.

I *have* heard WYSIWYG pronounced ("whizzy-wig"), but only amongst nerds discussing GUIs. (Which are also pronounced, as "gooey" or "gooeys" Very Happy) Then there are SCSI drives (scuzzy drives), and.... ahem. Smile

You are now self-nominated expert for all IT questions Megan

I used to talk to my UK family about a GSM and they had no idea what I was on about! Thing is, that is what a mobile phone is called here (only said with an Icelandic accent you understand so it sounds geh-ess-emm.) Talking to my sister I said "Use my gsm" and she said "What?". Bet someone French would have understood it! Or may be not, they probably call it le mobile now

No, in France, it's "une portable", and we send SMS -- from the computer, we send courriels.
