you guys are killin me!

Ok, so I'll keep adding browns. The smell is much better, more like rotting food than rotting butt. I'll air it out some also. It is an old 55 gal drum and I'll just pull the bung and cover with a coffee filter.

so onto creatures. Are a small continent of flies inevitable? especially fruit flies? or is it just because of the adjstment?

I think I will just buy my compost as the neighbors are close here in our Mobile Home Park and I would surely get complaints. No conpost bin here for sure ....

One of my heroes, too! Pete, who is 91, is still out there leading songs (his voice is going, but his spirit is strong). He still chops wood to heat his home in Beacon NY - oh, to have such energy! The words of the song, Turn Turn Turn, which Pete set to music in 1959, are from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8.

Did you know there is a movement afoot to nominate Pete for a Nobel Prize?

RE: cabbage butt compost...

Post  trustinhart on 8/10/2010, 2:24 am

We're showing our age here folks!!, but who cares??, some of us are old enough to get away with saying (singing) what we want and we don't care who hears

But just remember this, as seen on a tee-shirt: OLD AGE IS NOT FOR SISSIES!

All this nostalgia from a post about cabbage butt?!

I live among cabbage fields. Nothing like driving past a recently harvested cabbage field on a hot summer day. Blech!!!!!
Another reason to enjoy being in Kenya this summer.

Post  Pollinator on 7/24/2012, 12:28 am

In addition to more air and more "brown" compostables, you might try some crushed charcoal. This will absorb some of the noxious odors and hold them for slow release as nutrients to the growing plants later.

Just a not, charcoal and charcoal briquettes are not the same thing.
