Hi all, I am brand new at SFG. I don't even know when to plant my first seeds. I live in the Salt Lake valley and just moved into a new home. I am super excited about having a garden and can't wait to get started. I have a 6' x 3' box set on bricks on my concrete patio. I have vermiculite, soil, and compost to mix up and put in the box as well as a grid to lay on top for spacing.

I have a cut little family: a husband and one little boy. We want to have more children. I enjoy reading, witching movies, cooking, and learning to be self-sufficient. We use cloth diapers and I am learning to do fix-up work around the house instead of paying someone to do it for me.

Welcome!

Hi! I'm new too Smile So I'm no expert AT ALL but the seed packs themselves will give you an idea of when to plant. Not sure how much you have to stick to them, but at least it gives you a guideline if something says to plant in March and something else says July.

Your typo about "witching movies" (at least, I assume it was a typo) gave me a giggle. Smile We use cloth diapers too - my daughter is 22 months and starting to potty train but we've got a ways to go yet!

Isn't there a movie about women in tool belts?!.....

Congrats on your efforts towards self-reliance. There is a lot to be gained by your endeavors besides saving money.

When my wife learned how to use some of my tools, there was no stopping her. I finally had to buy her her own tools so mine were available when I needed them. And none of those pink girlie things either, oh no, it had to be MORE POWER! But I digress..

Welcome to the forum. SFG is a wonderful way to begin your gardening career. There's lots to be learned on the website, forum, and the new SFG book.

Hi SwissMiss, Welcome to the forum. You're in the Salt Lake Valley? Did you know that the man who wrote the book All New Square Foot Gardening lives there? Do you have the book yet? You will want to get a copy, either buy one or check it out at the library. It is the bible for SFG and will guide you through a lot of your beginning work. With the book, the website and forum you will be the expert in no time.

Welcome newby!

Post  quiltbea on 3/22/2010, 10:47 am

I still consider myself a newby since I only began veggie gardening last year. I've learned a lot using the SFQ method and loved it. I'll make changes this year to suit me and my family a bit better, but the concept is fantastic and I won't change that a bit.
Seed packets from reliable growers give good info on the back when to start, how to start (indoors or outdoors) and what to expect when.
Its a learning experience but you'll get better, I have no doubt.
Take the plunge and join us.
Welcome!
