My first SFG!!

Post  Aub on 8/8/2010, 9:56 pm

I just put up my first Square Foot Garden! I went out this morning and got the book, then went straight to the hardware store and got everything we needed. Well, almost everything, I forgot the boards for the grid! I guess with 3 kids running around the store I was a little side tracked. I'll get those boards tomorrow. I can't wait to start!!

I did fill it with Mel's Mix. It's not quite full, I need to mix a bit more. I have the garden all planned out, and next year's spring garden as well!

Welcome and congratulations!

Welcome, Aub, and congrats on your first SFG! We would love to hear about your plans, how your box construction is going, and of course we LOVE pictures!

I am not using pure Mel's Mix, but I thought I'd pass on that I've heard from others that your Mix will settle a bit over time... so don't be surprised if you start out with 6" deep that you wind up with 4" or 5" a little later. That is still plenty for non-highrise crops.

Information on how to post pictures (plus other handy forum how-to info) is here: http://squarefoot.creatingforum.com/how-to-f33/

I looked up the USDA Hardiness Zone for Peoria, and it is in Zone 5A. If you would like to be more precise, you can search by your Zip code here: http://www.garden.org/zipzone/index.php

Best wishes and Happy Gardening! flower
