Do Birds Eat Seedlings

Post  AZDYJ2K on Wed 11 Aug 2010 - 12:29

I did my usual morning inspection of my garden and found that half of my corn seedlings (3"-6") had been uprooted/torn/damaged. The damage was left there. I also found a pumpkin seedling destroyed. I have a small tomato plant, bean plants and small watermelon vine that were all left untouched.

Has anyone had a similar problem? Do you think it may be birds or possibly a cat? Thanks.

Yup... been there! I have had birds just uprooting my plants when they were just an inch or so tall. Most of my issues were resolved by putting a cover over the plants until they were large enough to be left alone by the Jays.

If the holes around the plants are larger, it is probably a larger animal like a cat or a squirrel. The bird damage I saw was just to the plants themselves and very little of the soil was disturbed.

Good luck with that!
