seeds

Post  kshimpi on 8/16/2010, 1:18 pm

I am new to SFG gardening and live in Chapel Hill, NC. From what I can tell, this is my region. I have been looking around town for seeds for fall crops and cannot find any anywhere. The frost dates are usually around the end of Oct, so it seems like it is close to time to put out the fall seeds. Where do folks get them?

What's up with that? I can't a good variety anywhere either.
Maybe a nursery.
If not you may have to get them mail order.

I broke down and ordered some online last night. Just seemed strange that I could not find any seeds anywhere around town (including the local nursery).

I agree. Even tho I am not in your area, I think the powers that be are idiots who don't know the first thing about gardening. We seem to be on the same schedule here in So Cal as they are in MA. Some things are local, but a lot is obviously on some weird, nonsensical timetable that has more to do with first grade understanding of seasons that actual planting timetables. Most nurseries and big box stores would do well to have giant posters of what can be planted now every month in their stores instead of pretending that summer is over and it is now 'back to school' time when no one gardens.

My farm and garden store carries seed all year round. They are more geared to farming than a simple nursery business. http://www.horseandbuggyfeeds.com/ maybe there is a similar store near you.

I ordered from Baker Creek too, but I also found a decent selection at a local feed store and an old fashioned hardware store.

Interesting story. Thanks for the link, Camprn. We plan to stop by Bakersville near Mansfield, MO on Sunday to pick up seeds for fall and next year's planting. We ate at their vegetarian restaurant last year - it was good, too.

No fall seeds

Post  ander217 on 8/19/2010, 6:54 am

Managers of two of our local businesses which sell seed in spring told us that the companies which supply their seed in spring will take back any unsold seed as long as it is returned to them by a certain date. If the stores keep seed past that return date, they are stuck with any which don't sell. We try to buy all of our fall seed in the spring and hold it over the summer, but we also order online if we need extra.

Have you considered exchanging seed? There is a seed exchange thread on this forum. Some of us might have just what you need.

Love the seed bank concept.
I will definitely check out the seed exchange for the spring. This forum is such a good resource of information!
