Green thing on top of Mel's Mix

Post  chechi on 9/22/2010, 10:30 pm

Hi,
This afternoon I went outside to water my garden and I notice a green film of this stuff on top of Mel's mix. It looks like green algae or something.

Has anyone experience this before?

What is it? Is it harmful for my plants? How do you get rid of it?

Thanks

chechi

Would love to see a picture. Has is been too wet or anything? Growing algae in zone 10 in CA ain't that easy in the best of settings! What is your MM source? Odd. I have no idea what it could be.

It does sound like some type of algae. However, I once purchased a bag of peat moss that was GROWING and green.

I get that green film on sphaghnum all the time when I soak it in water for topiary stuffing and container mulching (makes it sticky, pliable, formable).

Not sure what it is, but it hasn't killed anthing yet, FWIW.
