First frost?

Post  brake4squirrels on 9/26/2010, 9:33 am

Hey Everyone -

I'm in 4b, Minneapolis. My first risk of frost date is tomorrow September 27th. I'm guaranteed to get frost after October 8th.

From now until 10/8, where do I get information about if there is a predicted frost?? The weather report, or somewhere else? I want to know when I need to pick all my green tomatoes and other things.

Thanks!!

Sometimes the ol' fart down the road with the arthritic knee can be your best predictor of upcoming weather.

If you don't have one of those, try here

I check my area weather forecast daily on the Environment Canada website for our area. Sometimes I think the Env. Can. people just spin a wheel and post that. The arthritis guy would probably be more accurate.

Being in a Zone 3b and not wanting to give in any sooner than I have to, I faithfully cover my tomatoes for the first week that we get frost. Our coldest night was -5C last week. Most of the garden succumbed but I have saved my precious tomatoes. It is most likely just my imagination, but I think they taste better if I can leave them on the vine longer. Usually, after the first week or so of cold nights, we get a couple of weeks of warmer weather which gives me a bit more time to have them ripen up on the vine.

Not sure what your garden is like but it might be worth a try as long as your plants are not too tall or you don't have acres of them.

Just my luck, I have a trick knee. But I'm a ways from Minnesota....

I swear our weather people do the same thing. There are a lot of little micro-climates in Virginia.... like Washington state in some ways. I think of us as being near D.C., but really we are in the foothills of the Appalachians. Route 66 follows a valley from west to east, and severe weather tends to skip over it. I've seen dozens if not hundreds of t-storms on radar *split* and pass over our location. We still get wet, very wet, but the worst passes us to north and south and almost never hailed on.

Being in the South, we get frost warnings on TV and radio. I guess freezing weather is so common for you, it isn't highlighted, but down here, in early winter or spring, we get warned so we can cover plants or bring them in.
I agree with others to watch/ listen to the weather and cover whenever the forecast is for mid to low 30's.
