Oops, frost advisory tonight

Post  SFG in Chicago on 10/21/2010, 11:57 pm

They're predicting our first frost & I still have several green tomatoes on the vines. I wasn't paying attention and didn't know about the advisory until just now. Should I go out there with a flashlight & pick them? Is there any point, will they ripen if I pick them completely green?

Sad to see the end of my garden, I'm not ready for winter! Sad

Must be pretty late for you now, but you could try to wrap the plants by setting up stakes and covering with a lightweight blanket or plastic. Just don't let the plastic touch the leaves or they will go ahead and freeze.

If there is any color at all on the tomatoes, you can pick them, bring them in, and store in one layer in a box. They will continue to ripen.

The tomatoes are on a trellis which is taller than I am. I can't really cover them without help (DH is asleep). I think most of them are completely green, so I guess I won't bother picking them. Not really interested in fried green tomatoes or anything like that. It's already 34.8*F. Oh well. <sigh>

I couldn't stand to leave my babies out there. Yeah, I'm a nut. I went out at midnight in my pajamas & my coat & picked 8 1/2 lbs. of green tomatoes. Some have the slightest blush but most do not. I've read about putting them in a paper bag with a ripe apple, I'll do that tomorrow. Right now I'm going to bed! Thanks for bumping the other thread, I'll read through it tomorrow.

My completely green tomatoes (picked around Oct 1 when I had to tear out my garden) have ripened nicely indoors. I didn't put them in a bag, use apples, or anything. Only the very smallest ones failed to ripen. I'm still eating my own tomatoes! Very Happy

I pulled up all of mine almost two weeks ago. I left most of them on vines and have them hanging up downstairs in the wine cellar. They are ripening up nicely. I will probably have tomatoes for another couple of weeks if not longer.

Hmm... Megan, good to know. Maybe mine have a chance after all.

GK, I had heard about hanging them upside down on the vines, but my vines were intertwined with the trellis netting. Since I was out there in the dark & cold & I didn't want to mess with trying to separate the vines from the trellis.

I'm glad I went out and picked them. It got down to 30. Everything left was frost damaged. I pulled the last of my carrots today and pulled out the rest of my plants. Sad to see the end of the garden, but on to planning next year!

I have been out doing stuff in my garden in my dressing gown and slippers at night sometimes too! LOL! I am sure people think I am completely out of my mind! But that's okay. I work hard at fostering that impression.

Glad you saved your tomatoes. It will be worth it. That is some pretty cold weather for this time of year in Chicago isn't it? You are quite a bit further south than I am.

It is always sad to see the growing season come to an end. But I do like the way everything looks when it is all tidy and ready for winter. Stay warm.

Well it was quite late so I doubt anybody saw me. I think a frost here and there is normal for this time of year, though I've only lived here 2 years so I don't really know. Lived in Florida my whole life! Anyway, it's not going to stay that cold quite yet, it's supposed to get to 70 on Sunday.
