HARVESTING MY VEG'S - PART II

Post  Dunkinjean on 10/29/2010, 1:09 am

Back in early July my plants were growing well and starting to produce. Then came the drought of Jersey for the rest of the summer and hot, hot, hot weather!

Then I was away ALOT starting the 1st week of August - a week or so at at time - therefore it was difficult to tend to my garden as needed.

I only have one box SFG box 6 x 6 which I planted:
1 Rutgers tomato plant - did well until disease hit.
1 Cherry tomato plant - did real well considering the heat
2 cucumber plants - did well in the beginning giving us about 10 cucumbers but then faltered
1 square of basil plants - did extremely well.
3 squares of carrots - took long time to mature but did well
4 squares of bush green beans - did extremely well
1 bell pepper plant - had to be moved and potted into a pot - only a few peppers

Planted pumpkins from seed along side of house facing my SFG. Got about only 6 pumpkins.

Considering I was away alot since 1st week of August on and off and now away again along with the summer/fall drought - I feel if my plants were NOT in a SFG my plants would not have produced anything!

So, I will begin my 2nd year of planting this spring (hubby has promised to make a 2nd SFG box). He enjoyed checking on the garden as much as I did which is surprising.

I feel I have learned more about gardening from this forum than anywhere else!

Thanks Megan.

I got only 6 pumpkins from 6 plants. But I thought considering our summer drought I was lucky to get any.

Happy Halloween! boogie woogie

Megan,

I know, that is so sad.

That is the problem with HOA's. They want cookie cutter houses/townhouses/condos with everyone looking exactly the same. So silly. So stupid of them.

But you can adjust to your backyard accordingly.

Do you have any sideyard to use? Do you have a patio?

Well, the season is about done.

Might as well look to a bright spring for planting. flower

No sideyard or patio, no... and the backyard is heavily shaded. I'm still going to make a go of it, though! Smile Thank you for the kind thoughts.
