Aspiring New Gardener in Ohio!

Post  MasonGarden on 3/17/2010, 4:03 pm

Greetings All! I have read the book, have a nice sunny area in the garden calling my name, and am ready to become a SFG'er! I've never gardened before, but at 50+, I've decided that now is as good a time as any. I live just outside of Cincinnati, OH (6a), the weather is starting to warm-up, and I'm ready to assemble my materials to build my boxes. I'm planning on (1) - 2x4x6 box for strawberries (we love them, but I hear they can take over a garden if you don't separate them); (1) - 4x4x6 box; and (1) - 4x4x12 box (to include potatoes, carrots, onions and tomatoes). I'm interested in hearing from other SFG'ers in this area regarding which vegetables and fruits grow best, and where I can get my hands on the elusive vermiculite, or a pre-mixed soil similar to Mel's Mix since he doesn't ship outside of Utah! Thanks in advance for your help, and I'm looking forward to communicating with this community!

Hey hi! I'll be 53 tomorrow and I am doing my 1st SFG. I run out with my coffee every day to see how many millimeters the peas have grown. It is more fun than a new car (and I like to drive!)

welcome to the forum!

i'm in ohio, too. newark/columbus area.

really just about anything will grow in mel's mix!

i'm trying to grow brussel sprouts - already have some sprouting (i made mini greenhouses for them to keep them warm - the mini greenhouse is a milk jug - bottom cut off)

spinach, canteloupe, tomatoes, green peppers, leafy lettuces, red beets, nasturtiums, carrots, etc all do well here. oh yeah, broccoli, kale, garlic, too and beans and . . well you get the idea. Smile

welcome again! so glad to see another ohioan!

Lavender Deb and HappyFrog, thanks for the welcome! Lavender Deb, I am watching Donna's videos on YouTube for inspiration as you suggested in a posting to another member. HappyFrog I am pleased to know that so many plants grow well here, so I'm looking forward to my first harvest!

Happy Gardening!

Howdy and welcome to the Square Foot Gardening forum. A Google search found one hit on Vermiculite in Ohio. I don't know how far Pebbles, OH is from you. If it is close try Good Seed Farm. They have a website so check it out or call. They may also know were to get vermiculite closer to you. Also check out the vermiculite forum under the General Forum banner. If a listing is there for your area give it a go. When you find your V. please post where you found it and the price you paid for it.

As for what veggies grow in your area contact the local Master Gardeners. Master Gardeners may be in the same office with the local Extension Agent who should be listed in the phone book.

God Bless, Ward.

Thanks for the Info!

Ward - Many thanks for the vermiculite information, and the suggestion to contact a Master Gardener. I was also able to locate a certified SFG'er through the SFG regional page for Ohio. He lives about 20 miles away (Alfred Hall - terrapinfarm@yahoo.com) and also teaches classes on SFG. It's been a productive day for me in SFG-land!

Happy Gardening!

Howdy:

When you talk to Mr. Hall ask him to post his sources for vermiculite on the Vermiculite Forum. Thanks.
