Greetings from Sunny South Carolina !

Post  staf74 on 11/24/2010, 9:13 pm

Posted on the welcome mat but should probably say hi to my locals also! Now I would begin with the traditional "Hey y'all" but I am originally from England. Anyhow, proud to make the U.S.A my home and happy to move to a climate that has a much more productive growing season! To be honest, as much as I used to loathe the incessant rain, now I sometimes do pray for those English rainy days now that my SFG is up and running. The summer months here can be brutal; although the Summer Basil went wild and loved it. Bought Mel's book for summer reading and went for four (4x4) raised beds this fall. Followed it almost religiously and WOW....what a success. It is so much fun and is my new hobby. My wife calls my plants "the children" as I seem to care for them as such. "Go check and see how the children are doing hun!" Everything pure organic and came out better than my wildest dreams. Thanks MEL !!! Looking forward to sharing ideas and stories.
Here's some pics http://www.flickr.com/photos/56292096@N03/. Note how giant the broccoli became and that I switched out the romaine in the lettuce bed that all bolted after we hit mid-upper 80's for almost two weeks in early October. Oh well..the neighbors were all happy I can tell you that Wink

Welcome staf74! Glad to have you here. You will find that this group has a lot to contribute and we certainly would enjoy hearing about your successes (and even things that did not go as planned) We love pictures too! Please feel free to ask questions, there are lots of experienced SFGardeners and quite a few that are fairly new to SFG, but are willing and anxious to help.
glad you\'re here

smiles

Thanks for the welcome ! I just managed to upload some pics to flickr and posted the link on my first post and in the showcase forum pages. I'm going into full Winterize mode right now and am experimenting with different PVC plastic covered hoop house configs. I've made it through 3 frosts and one hard freeze thus far. Looks like we'll hit 30 again this weekend. Will browse posts for help with this.

Thanks for the pictures. You have done a wonderful job with your SFG. So glad you were able to share with us.

Use the search feature and look for Covered Wagons by Boffer. He uses PVC pipe and 6 mil plastic for his covered wagons to extend his season earlier in the spring and then later into the fall. He also uses them to cover up for the winter. There are a couple of strings on covered wagons.

Thanks Ander! Glad to be a part of the SFG crew. It's been, thus far, a very worthwhile experience. I think the fall has been much easier to grow however without the hoardes of insects that will undoubtedly test my patience next spring. Nevertheless, I appreciate the kind words and look forward to many seasons of SFG fun.... Cheers!
