My first beet

Post  duhh on 12/9/2010, 2:18 am

I pulled up a beet today, it was a little early, but it was good. Is it supposed to be so long? It looked like a big red carrot! I will be making something with the greens tomorrow.

Duhh, how marvelous to have your first beet! Most of mine were pretty round, but some were a little elongated. I did not have the patience to let them great big like that and many of mine just did not bulb up at all. I wonder what variety you grew?

Gourmet Blend from botanical interests.

It has three kinds in the pack. I think this one was a chioggia. It was white with pink rings on the inside.

The others in the pack are: Detroit Dark Red and a Golden.

Now that I'm looking at the package, they are supposed to look like that.

It was very good. Of course, I have never eaten a fresh beet and didn't know if I would like it. My parents always just had canned beets and I didn't like those at all. Glad I tried something new! Very Happy

This was planted end of Sept.

oh, YUM!!! i love pics of fresh produce! thanks for sharing! that is one very cool beet!

the greens on top are also quite lovely in a salad. i must admit i actually prefer the beet tops to the beets. sprinkle a little red wine vinegar and a drizzle of olive oil. oh yeah, yum. shh. don't tell my kids. *grin*
