My wife and I live in Southeast Texas near Beaumont. I enjoy gardening, wood working, cooking and nutrition. My wife enjoys scrapbooking, children and taking walks in the park (and of course I do). We celebrated our seventh anniversary in September, which was the month of my 40th birthday.
We started our first garden by starting with SFG last May, but eventually abandoned it, due to exhaustion from a health problem. Our SFG was actually too far away from the house, near the fence.
So, this time I am building a wicking box by the front porch, and will attach a float valve to the fill tube, thus fully automating the watering of our SFG.
We would like to host a 3 day symposium in Beaumont with Mel, Victoria and the rest of the team. I will be finishing my certification requirements at the event, if it is approved by the Foundation. If you live within driving distance from Beaumont, we will include a field trip to a botanical garden in the area as well.
As far as what to grow in our SFG. We have subscribed to a weekly reminder from www.gardenate.com. It is an international reminder system for gardeners. It asks for information related to your hardiness zone, and I find it extremely helpful. You can find much of the information here throughout the forum, by searching through the regional links and following the different threads. If you have any questions about gardening just click on a thread.

copying last post and deleting it because i'm adding more info:

how exciting that you'll be getting your certification soon! i too am working on that.

i actually have my sfg boxes right outside my side door and in my front yard. it is close to the house and easy to keep up with that way. looks a little strange at times depending on what's growing/not growing, but surprisingly, my neighbors have come around and several are planting sfg's because of my example.

'sides the lighting is best in myu front yard. *smile*

i am very intrigued by your watering plans - that sounds really really neat! can you start another thread about that in the sfg general forums so we can all see that - this way this info won't get lost in the welcome area.

thanks david for the message on this very subject: can be found here:

if someone would like to delete previous message that would be great - cannot delete it - the 'x' is gone. ..

Congratulations David on the certification. If I was a bit closer would like to make the trip.

Thanks for the heads up on Gardenate, did not know about that site. Also the comment on placement of your SFG was interesting. I am debating now on where to put mine.

One thing I am still learning is that placing your garden depends on MANY things. Sunlight and shade patterns, drainage, access to water, convenience, weatherbreaks, fencing out pests, Homeowner's Associations get that pesky wabbi to name a few. My first SFG was rather backwards compared to the standard setup (north side of house, north-to-south trellises) but it still worked out great, which I think is a testament to the strength of the basic set-up! Very Happy

Let me know with as much notice as possible on the seminar thing... I'll come. I am from Liberty originally, graduated from Lamar, and one of my boys is at Lamar now...

No problem. I am from Hamshire- Fannett. What would be your thoughts on receiving a yearly membership with the Shangri La botanical garden as part of the registration fee.

Would you also like to have regular meetings between attendees of the seminar, and maybe start a local sfg club.

With respect to the gardens membership and the meetings/club... I am not sure. In my case, I live a "pretty fur piece up the country" from you guys now... (220mi via US96). Not exactly sure how many times I can justify making the trip for club meetings...

skype conference my friends! this way you all can meet in comfort of your home with your favorite snack and beverage in hand while you chat. . .

and of course, online chat here thru sfg forums. .. i haven't done the online chat here much at all so not sure if there's separate rooms you can enter to have group conferences or if it's just general room - someone else with experience in this will probably chime in with more info on this.

just a thought. Smile

i have family and friends literally all over teh world and we skype - individually and conference. works for us.

for my deaf friends/family we use our VRS (that's a video phone that has much smoother and clearer resolution - 'cause we get windmilling pretty fast when we have stuff to share and skype has lags so you lose half a conversation in ASL - you all think i talk a lot in english. . lol - you should see me in ASL when i get passionate about something. *grin*)

hope this idea is helpful. Smile

So far we (Victoria and myself) have set April as the month for a 3 Day Symposium with Mel. Have to check with the YMBL of Southeast Texas about the South Texas State Fair. That event ends on Easter Sunday. I will keep everyone posted.

I just want it to be clear that this event is not yet in stone or being announced by the Foundation itself...so until it is I am locking this thread...when it is in stone and confirmed to me by someone at the foundation (I have communications into them) I will unlock and the discussion can proceed!! Smile

I sure hope your symposium works out David! I just also have to make sure there is no ramification against the Foundation or the forum due to untimely announcements.

Thank you for your patience in this matter!

Hope to unlock soon Smile
