Vermiculture...Where to buy worms.

Post  GardenZen on 12/15/2010, 6:30 pm

I am going to set up a worm composter and see how it goes.

I have found blog posts and YouTube videos of home made contraptions and
read the excellent description on here.

My thought was to have a thread where others could post places they have
bought worms from and could recommend....and/or let us know where NOT to
buy from.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Vermiculture...Where to buy worms.

Post  janefss2002 on 12/15/2010, 8:17 pm

Hi GardenZen,

I like this idea. It took me a long time last year to sort through all of the info out there on the web to get started. I found on other forums where people had lots of trouble with some vendors as far as the quality of worms that arrived through mail order (dead or alive), response to complaints, replacement of orders, quantity of worms that did arrive, etc.

So I stumbled on a worm vendor in my local area and have had a great experience. We love our worms! They make the best stuff!

We started last Christmas with 1 Worm Factory (this system fits us rather than a home made rig - that is just us) and expanded this past fall to a Worm Factory 360 (we think a better setup). We "split" our colony when we harvested a tray and started the 360 with the worms in that tray. Having the 2 systems seems to meet our kitchen veggie waste for now. We are also developing an outdoor Trash Can compost system for Garden/Yard Waste. We are not there yet, but working on it.

Here is the place I got our worms from. Heather is a wonderful "Worm Rancher" and has been available for any followup I've ever needed. She is also now on Facebook if that is important. She also mail orders.

Good luck! Vermicomposting has been good for us and I applaud you for starting this cheers

Jane

This is another lady that has worms for sale. Also very nice and her website has a LOT of vermiculture information including many videos.

There is a gentleman in Garland that sells worms by the pound for a good price, let me see if I can find that website, BRB. I have purchased from both of them with no problems.

Here he is

I think this thread is a great idea!

For my Canadian SFGers, there is a great lady in Bradford, Ontario that sells worms for vermicomposting. It appears that she ships Canada wide too.

Here's the link to her site: http://www.cathyscomposters.com/

She sells Worm Chalet's too.
