Pre-January Garden Update

Post  Chopper on 12/30/2010, 12:38 am

I will be very sidetracked in Jan so wanted to get this out ASAP. Love the weather - saving hundreds on water! Turned off the auto sprinklers a few weeks ago and hope not to have to turn them on again anytime soon.

Happy to have the raised beds because the ground is completely saturated.

That said everything looks good. Lettuce, dill, cilantro, cabbage, spinach, garlic, onions, beets, carrots and peas all coming along nicely. Finally got some flowers on the sugar snaps but no peas yet. I do have some broccoli buds and am anxiously waiting to have enough for a meal. Love the cool weather for growing. AND THE RAIN!

This season has produced the biggest carrots so far. And the most gorgeous beets.

Plant in Jan in So Cal:
Beets
Broccoli
Brussel Sprouts
Cabbage
Carrots
Cauliflower
Leeks
Lettuce
Onions Bunching
Onions/Garlic sets
Parsley
Peas
Potatoes
Spinach

Well, if I was trying to grow tomatoes and it was JULY I probably would not be as thrilled. Last year at this time I wasn't even sure I would break out my winter sweaters.

thanks I was happy to see your suggestions on what to plant in SoCal in January. I just received the SFG Book from my daughter for Christmas and wasn't sure what I could actually plant in January. Hopefully it will dry out enough soon for my husband to build my box (lumber is already waiting in the garage) and to clear the spot I want to put it. I am planning to start with 1 4x8 box and then add another before summer.

There isn't a month that you can't plant something, and usually multiple things. Be ready - it never ends!

Thank you so much for this post! I finally quit my all-consuming, no time to eat much less garden job and I am prepping my boxes this week for January planting.

I hope to be ready to plant all these good things next week. I want to get everything in before I find my next position Very Happy
