Your Favorite Gardening Apps

Post  sfg4uKim on 12/30/2010, 8:51 am

Do any of you have favorite gardening apps? Here are a couple I'm just starting to work with.

A guy from my SFG class told us about an iPhone (et al) App called iGrowIt that I've found useful.

You select your zone (or look up your hardiness zone by typing in your zip code) and it will tell you what crops you can plant each month. When you bring up the App it starts out saying "What can I grow today?" Then you tap on that icon and it brings up the information.

For instance, here in Zone 7, there are no crops that I can start in January. However, in February it shows I can grow Jerusalem Artichokes, Turnips, Onions and 6 other crops. If I click on that veggie, I can get ideas for Preparation, Planting & sowing, Aftercare and Ready to Eat (with harvesting time and even a recipe).

You can even take notes.

I tried (and loved) Garden Tracker, but it stopped working for me (I bought the paid version). I was working with the developers, but nothing I've tried has worked. I'm going to try it on my hubby's phone since it's a newer model.

Happy Apping!
Kim

Yeh Megan, the "SFG" app is Garden Tracker.

Okay, I'm blushing now. Smile Embarassed At least it's a way to share the link with others, though!

Tell you what, though.... speaking of Zone 7 and January, given our "warm" snap I'm going to try planting a few things and see what happens.

i found most garden software and apps to be substandard at best.
there really has not been a good piece garden software written since the last time organic gardening magazine reviewed vegetable gardening software.

Ribsy:

I was hoping that with the passage of time, things would improve. : ) I also realize that no app will provide everything to everybody, so I guess I'm pretty "easy to please".

Garden Tracker was good for me because it was modified specifically for SFG and did what I wanted it to do. It just stopped loading on my phone.

LOL I also feel that it wold be easier to bring my phone out into the garden with me rather than my laptop, and I'm such a curious person I want my info right away. : )

I still use my 3 ring binder. My sheets with the planned out grids are held in the acrylic sleeves, some notes in the margins and I can keep notes on the note paper in chronologic order, pockets for seed packets, receipts, etc.

Notebook Paper

Post  bettyd_z7_va on 12/30/2010, 5:37 pm

I don't have a phone that does any of the fancy stuff. I just used notebook paper and drew my little grids last fall.

This was my first SFG.

SO, Megan- Whatcha planting in Jan? I'm south of you in Cen Va. You've got me thinking.

I downloaded Garden Tracker a few days ago and have been playing with the free version before deciding to upgrade to the paid version. Here is what I like and don't like

Like - You can store your layout and it tracks days to harvest. Has alot of the same info as the book so you don't have to lug the book out to the garden. Has common garden pest/disease info

Dislike - I wish there was a way to search for vegetable by season. It would make it easier to decide what to plant when. Is missing some vegetable I was looking for (Celery, Dill)

I plan to download the other app above to compare. Maybe a combo of the two would be best? Kind of like books, not just one has everything

Yeh, I like the notebook idea, but when I'm out in the garden and have a question that can only be online . . . I've got ADHD and ALWAYS have "Oh look, a chicken!" moments. By the time I go inside, I've forgotten when I was going to do. : )

I love the Garden Tracker app on my iPad. Unfortunately, I lost my iPad backup on my computer and the app somehow got deleted from my iPad. Now I can't figure out how to get it back on without having to pay for it again. Apparently, there is no way for the app or the iPad to know it's already paid for unless you pay for it again. silly me

That doesn't sound right, Blackrose. The app purchase should be tied to your Apple ID. It may ask you for your ID again (probably will) but it should say something after that like you already paid for it.

Who is the developer of this app? I can't seem to find it in my App Store. The only app I can find with "iGrow" in it is one that definitely does NOT having anything to do with gardening! Shocked

Hmmm... I must be doing something wrong then. When I try to change my trial version to a full version, the only option it gives me is to pay for it. Mad

One of the things they had me do was to delete the program from my phone then reinstall it. They said it would be free to do so. SOOOOO I think you'll be able to get it w/o having to pay a second time.

iGrowIt is from appgrading.com/iGrowIt

Post  Blackrose on 1/1/2011, 1:13 am

Thanks Kim. I have tried deleting it and reinstalling, but it still asks me to pay again to upgrade it to the full version. I have sent an e-mail to the developer. Hopefully they will get back to me after all the Holidays are over.

As for iGrowIt. I have found it at a few sites. Unfortunately, they link back to the Apple App Store and it is not available there right now. I'm thinking of e-mailing the developer of that app as well to see if there is a way for me to get it.

Thanks again!

We spent over an hour with a couple of sheets of graph paper today Smile I have a ton of seeds left over so I'm not going hog wild with the seed buying, much to my husband's relief! I tried Folia and a kitchen garden planner, but it's just not the same online. I guess I'm old-fashioned, even though I've only been gardening for two years.

Does anyone have any app suggestions for companion planting? I've got several books, and even more websites, I use every year but I'm looking for an app that I can play with while sitting in traffic dreaming of green warm sunny days. Smile

Some of the apps listed are iPhone only (or I can't find them on the Android app market) so they look cool but I can't use them. Might as well put this data plan I pay for to good use!
