My first box

Post  SirTravers on 3/18/2010, 8:01 pm

Well I got my first box made today. It's a 2x8 foot bed. My youngest son helped me put the boards together, staple in the fabric, stir up the mix, fill the box, and plant my first veggies

I don't have anything on hand to divide the squares right now, but I'm sure I can scavenge something up soon.

How old is your son? I like the way you stapled the fabric to the boxes. I didn't have grids the first year. By time I got every thing done it was June so I figured I should just plant the seeds so the whole year wasn't a waste instead of waiting until I put the grids on. I had an infant at the time.

That's my 4 year old. He was gung ho to help me with the project. I'll have to get some more mix supplies to make up another batch before I build my next box and put it out. I'm sure he'll be right in there with me again too.

All you grubbers who are putting up "boxes" make me jealous. I won't be getting my next one until April when the next batch of sprouts is ready to get their own place. I am HOPING I have good compost by then

I'm on board with the "well, you drew grids so we won't give you a hard time" approach . And I am definitely on board about the photo of your son helping!

And I am so provincial, that I am surprised that it snows in New Mexico. (Even though my mother lived in Arizona for about 10 years. After a year, I talked her into moving out of Phoenix, to Prescott, where it snows a little. She had a friend in Flagstaff where it snows real snow. Close minded-ness is an important thing to lose.)

Fun Update

Post  SirTravers on 3/28/2010, 8:09 pm

Well I have a fun little update. I found 2 onions volunteering out in the yard where my kids had "planted them" this winter.

I also got some irises from a local Freecycle member. I'm planting them temporarily in my box until I can get them a good home in my yard.

Creating squares for your box

Post  dssawtelle on 3/28/2010, 11:34 pm

Hi SirTravers, great start. I didn't like the size of lathe nor the expense so I scrounged some strapping tape out of the trash bins at my Home Depot. (sometimes they will give you some) I just stapled it to the tops of the wood. Some of my boxes are going on their third season and the tape is still good.

love your box and adore your little boy! he's just a cutie!

same age as my middle kid.

you're going to have such fun with him this year in your garden - my middle kid is mroe into it this year - last year he didn't have much patience after we did the 'fun' part - playing in dirt (mixing the blend together, lol). he sure did have fun harvesting tomatoes and picking greenbeans for me, though. Smile

a cheap, err frugal tip for your sectioning off your box - use clothesline or yarn. i get between 3 months -9 months for yarn. clothesline is going strong. i just used a staple gun to attach it to the box, tying a simple knot on the end of the yarn/string to keep it from coming thru the staples.

in about an hour, when my 4yr old returns home (he goes to the local Deaf school) we're all going to the garden to plant more spinach and harvest some spinach leaves for our dinner tonight.

bettyann
who had great fun filling in for a day this past weekend at the local home and garden show in the square foot garden booth - it was a lot of fun! Smile

Great going! You box certainly looks so much better than mine.

And I love the idea of using strapping tape -- Makes great sense.

Early April Update!

Post  SirTravers on 4/8/2010, 11:19 pm

Just wanted to share some photos of my veggies growing.
The lettuce is as bug as my palm. I've already picked two handfuls and you can't even tell!
This is my 3rd grader's school contest cabbage. I can't wait to see how big it gets.
My broccoli is getting big!
