We are getting more snow in Ottawa today and tomorrow. Yikes it's not even the end of November yet. So I was out cleaning off the cars and walkways. I'll let the snowplowing contractor do the driveway. While I was shoveling this heavy snow an idea sprang (or is it sprung) into my puny brain ... why not build a snowman near the SFG to protect it from predators.

So here it is ... presenting for the first time ... Scare"snow" ...

Well you sure have had a lot of snow this year. We haven't had our first flake yet. I'm still mowing up leaves.

At my house in Bend, Oregon, there's about a 1/2" of snow on the ground.

However, Wunderground has us down for approximately 15" over the next 10 days.

Various circumstances have caused me to postpone my trip to Portland until Wednesday--which should be a somewhat better travel day.

Oh My Gosh TD

Central Ohio has not had a decent dusting yet.  Love your large evergreen tree.  Reminds of the one I had at my last house. I ended up getting boxes of those giant Christmas ornaments to decorate the tree.  Husband rigged up a long pole to reach high branches.  It was tedious but oh my it was so pretty. The pic of your tree makes me want to come up there and decorate it !!

Post  MrBooker on 12/8/2016, 7:27 am

No snow in zone 6a yet but some flurries in the forecast for Sat. It's going down to 16* tonight and 18* tomorrow night. I pulled half my carrots, beets and turnips yesterday and left the other half in the ground to overwinter as an experiment. I put down about 12 inches of mulched leaves over them.

I figured if everything freezes in the ground this winter, at least I will have salvaged  half of it. After I mulched the boxes, I put the plastic up over the hoops as we're supposed to have sunshine for the next couple days. Hopefully it will heat the soil and prolong a hard freeze.

The SFG where I pulled the carrots from was built over an existing inground garden. Two of the "Tendersweet" carrots I  pulled were close to 12 inches long and fairly straight. One of the "Danver half long" carrot was huge.

I also cut 4 small heads of cabbage yesterday. I just couldn't force myself to leave them in the SFG to try and overwinter them. We get some 10* below zero weather and I'm sure they wouldn't survive.

I' post some pics later this morning.

Our couple hours of sloppy snow turned back into rain, which is what we're supposed to have for 9 of the next 10 days. Who knows when I'll be able to check on the damages outside. Sad

It's snowing here now, with going on around 6" of snow on the ground.  Wunderground has my area down for about 17" over the next 10 days, down from 24" yesterday.  It will change again today, I'm sure.

The cats seem to understand why they can't go out.  Sterling wistfully sits on windowsills, watching that white stuff fall.

Wunderground currently says 8"-12" here on Wednesday.  We shall see, although I wouldn't be surprised, given that cold pool of water in the North Pacific, and what happened in Siberia/Russia/Northern Europe a month or so ago.  There was even speculation that that pattern would spread to the U.S.  (It seems to be doing so.)

Here in Ottawa we are currently in the middle of a Colorado low weather system which is bringing snow and later freezing rain. Just went out to clean the walkways and took the opportunity to take some photos.

Our reindeer is taking things in stride.

Looking over the pond area.

Our old Honda Civic is keeping warm under a blanket of snow.

Evergreen tree which is on the edge of the neighbours lawn but which reaches over our lawn as well.

It is currently -22 F and we got about a foot of snow over the last 2 days. Now it is sunny, and a good day to sit in a sunny window and sip tea and knit. If it warms a bit later I will go ski around the field with the dogs.

Just the other day, NOAA or NASA (I forget which) reported that we're approaching a solar grand minimum, sometime between 2019 and 2022.  I believe it could happen sooner.

Such events typically are associated with phases like a Maunder minimum, Dalton minimum, etc., and/or mini ice ages.
