85 today, but first freeze in the forecast!

Post  elliephant on 1/30/2011, 11:56 am

Yikes! After highs in the 80s the first part of the week, we are supposed to have a high of 55 on Wed with a low of 30! That would be the first freeze of the winter. Good thing my tomato and pepper seedlings weren't quite ready to put out yet! I'm torn between hoping the forecast shifts upward a bit for the sake of what I've got out there right now and hoping we do get the freeze to kill the bugs (I've noticed a BIG difference in the amount of pests since the one night a few weeks ago that we got down to 35.
My mom is coming to visit from Charlotte, NC on Wed...so I guess she's bringing the cold with her. Hope to take her out to South Padre Island to play on the beach, so I sure hope it warms back up during the 2 weeks she's here.

Okay, I know I shouldn't laugh but I always get a kick out of it when you get "cold" temps in Texas. A friend of mine lives in Texas and they had a few inches of snow there a couple of weeks ago. She couldn't go to work!

Seriously, it is those extremes that are hard to take and it is very hard on the plants. Hope you don't lose any and that it warms up for your mom's visit.

Best of luck.

A FEW inches??? Here in NE TX we had 8". Now I know to someone like me, born and raised in IL, that's not a lot of snow, but down here it is. Especially if we get ice, the electric poles down here are not as thick or closely spaced as they are further north.

We got up to 74 yesterday, and it's 68 right now, and my tail bone is telling me the cold is on the way! I do miss the long freeze if only for the bug zapping effect, but don't miss the cold.

I know. Please forgive me. Like I said, I know I shouldn't laugh. You do not have all the snow removal equipment that we do up here where it is winter 8-10 months of the year. And even down in Vancouver, BC where my kids live, the majority of people don't have their cars equipped with proper tires to handle driving in snow. Some winters they don't get snow at all so have very little experience driving in it. It all makes a difference.

Like you, I don't really like the cold. And the older I get, I like it even less. And I am sick and tired of shovelling that white stuff. Winter wonderland my ***!

Again,,,,,,,,,forgive me for taking pleasure in your misery.

No need to ask for forgiveness, I laugh at the fact that everything shuts down with 2" of snow. I sent my husband to the store for sugar and salt before the last bought, he said there was not 1 single bag of sugar on the shelves at Wal Mart, but plenty of salt. I learned how to drive on ice and snow, but I sure don't get out in it down here. In the winter of '83-'84 I lived in OK, they had 2 snow plows, 1 in Tulsa and 1 in OK City. They left them outside when it snowed, and they both froze and the motors had to be replaced. I'll be 45 this Oct, and I hate to sweat, but I'd rather shed my clothes for the heat down here than bundle up in the cold. I don't envy those of you who brave the cold!!!

Current forecast for Tuesday: High of 80, low of 30. Crazy cold front!

ETA: and laugh away, I do too! While in college I spent the winters in Utah and the summers on the CA/AZ border...snow in the winter and 110 on a normal summer day, 120+ during a heat spell.

Throw in the constant pollen down here and you have a wonderful mix for a croupy family. My eyes are swollen and puffy from 3 days of yard work. But it's worth it to get out and make my own Vitamin D, even if it is going to all freeze over again tomorrow, that will hold me for a few more weeks.

I cleaned off all my pots, got some soil, pulled out my seeds, so now I can get a jump on growing. We are supposed to have another wet spring, thank goodness a friend has allowed us to use their greenhouse, as long as we share some of what we grow, no problem!!!

Can you just cover your tomatoes for the next one or two nights? It seems a shame to pick the green tomatoes if it is not going to stay cold.

I do think I'm going to cover them...I've just never done it before, so I'm afraid I'll do it wrong and it won't work, lol. And I do love fried green tomatoes! (Probably shouldn't eat them if I want to keep losing weight, though!)

I was going to say, there is nothing like fried green tomatoes.

Re: 85 today, but first freeze in the forecast!

Post  elliephant on 2/2/2011, 3:53 pm

Well, just a mild freeze last night...a few hours around 32 would be my guess.

But tonight and tomorrow...HOLY COW! It could get as low as 25 tonight (and I believe it will because they were forecasting 45 for today and it's only getting up to 35) and then tomorrow we may stay below freezing all day (high of 31) with precipitation starting in the middle of the day and continuing into Friday morning. Totally big weather event down here, lol. Don't think my tomatoes are going to make it, even covered. And I have my doubts about the peas. Going to harvest as much lettuce as we can eat in the next few days. Broccoli and cauliflower, though? Those are supposed to be cold hardy, aren't they? Think they could survive 25 degrees and a day below freezing if they are tarped? Guess I'm going to find out!

Well, the tomato plant didn't survive, but it looks like everything else did. We're getting another cold front tomorrow afternoon/evening, but so far it looks like our lows will be about 35/36.

Last Friday morning we woke up to a sheet of ice over everything. We got freezing rain starting the night before. That was fun because it was my oldest's 5th birthday and we had a great morning cracking all the ice in the backyard. It's 70 degrees today and we had plans to go to the beach (South Padre Island is about an hour and a half away) with my mom who is visiting from Charlotte, NC, but I had a heavy metal pipe fall on my nose and so we'll just hope for warm weather again early next week.

I'm itching to get my tomatoes outside. I will probably start hardening them off as soon as we recover from this latest cold spell.

Here are a few pictures of our icy morning and what I did to cover my gardens. You can see my seedlings in the windowsill in the last one!

You had that "had a heavy metal pipe fall on my nose" kind of hidden in there.

Hope it is not too bad, but since you are not going to S Padre Island, it seems to be more than just a bump on the nose. Do you want to 'splain that Lucy?

LOL, well, I was taking down boxes in the girls' closet, trying to find their swimsuits. I knocked down the pole that you hang clothes on, which in their room is a very heavy, thick, pole of almost too great of a diameter for the hangers. The thing hit me square in the nose, scratched up both lenses on my new(!) glasses and has left me with quite a headache. Thank goodness my mom is here. I got a nap and felt better until my baby bumped my nose again! Just not well enough to tackle a day at the beach.

I sure hope your nose is okay, that sounds like something that would happen to me. It is raining up here in NE TX, and I'm watching the pink, blue, and gray, head my way across the radar screen. They say that we may just shatter the record for most snow in 1 season today, we have already had a foot in our yard this year.

So, the follow-up to this is that a day with 35 as the high has been followed just a couple of weeks later with a high of 94 yesterday. Gardening in south Texas sure is interesting. Laughing

I will agree with that one, hubby brought home some virus, add to that a few days of mid 70's, out in the dirt and pollen, and I also have sinus activity going on. So today's project is allergy pills and orange juice.
