I am officially OLD and proud of it

Post  dixie on 2/14/2011, 3:29 pm

Friday was my last day at work & now I can play. I have had SO much fun today doing just what I want to do.

I started seeds inside: A few assorted cabbages, & Peppers: Tabasco, King of the North, Cal wonder, Rainbow mix, Golden Marconi, Holy Mole, Tam Jalapeno, regular Jalapeno, Emerald Giant, Ancho, Yellow Monster, and banana (will be a surprise as to whether hot or sweet). I'll place the tray on top of my fridge where it's nice & warm til they sprout, them over under my grow light set-up.

In the end of my garlic bed I direct seeded 2 squares of Red Wing lettuce mix from Baker Creek, always a delicious & colorful mix, bunching onion seeds and spinach & covered with a low tunnel.

Onions: Walmart had their onion sets out, so I am trying something - I put about 6 inches of soil in a large planter, put the sets on top & covered with about 3 inches of mix. As they start to grow I am going to add mix & see what kind of green onions I get. Hopefully they will have lots of white before getting a strong taste.

Wally World also had strawberry plants that were actually alive, so I bought 30 new plants. Since my established ones have already started putting on new growth, I planted these out.

Next will be to finish sorting my seeds & see what I have to offer.

I turned 62 on 2/10, 2/11 was my last day at my full-time job. Now I am retired, but definitely not through working around here. Sorry I wasn't clear.

Congrats on the semi-retirement. I've been asking my parents to retire but they are to bull headed. lol! So gardening is your prime objective at the moment?

Sure is, plus I design jewelry & have other hobbies, but I'm focusing on gardening right now.

Dixie:

When I go to KFC I get the "Senior Discount" for the buffet. AYCE for under $6.00. Lots of good veggies there and I leave the chicken for someone else.

Being our age (I will be 61 in April) does have its perks.

God Bless, Ward and Mary.

I had a wonderful surprise get together with some friends from church at my favorite Chinese restaurant Sat. afternoon.

How is your weather? We had snow last week, today it hit 70. I hope your garden season is better than last year. You deserve some corn!

Dixie,
Congratulations on being officially retired from the outside business world and welcome to the garden club. Its a lot more fun. Gardening more often is still work but not as hard and not as often and enjoyable besides.

You're going to love it.

You are not officially old until you become a card carrying old person. The card? Your Medicare card. That's when I finally declared myself a senior citizen. Happy retirement.

Not the age but the miles

Being our age (I will be 61 in April) does have its perks.

We were in a local fast food restaurant a few months ago and ordered breakfast. I asked the young lady behind the counter how old one has to be to receive their senior discount (I'm 55.) She looked at me and said, "Don't worry. I already gave it to you."

Sometimes it's not the years, it's the miles that count. Here's hoping your tires still have lots of tread on them, Dixie, and you enjoy "retirement".
