Trellises and ham radio
Okay, this one is REALLY outside the box!
Has anyone ever tried to incorporate a ham radio antenna into a trellis? :?:

antenna?
No ham radio antenna, but we bought one of those fancy weather things that tells wind speed, humidity, temp, etc. It has an outdoor thermometer that sends a signal to the receiver inside. We attached that to our trellis, along with the wind speed whirly thing. I asked hubby what would happen this summer when the trellis is covered with veggies. He just shrugged and grinned.
It's working quite well at the moment.

I'm thinking about the back yard. Right now hubby's antenna is out there... strung low enough to be a real hazard for me (neck level!!) It's going to have to shift, so I'm trying to think ahead to find a reasonable way to make room for me to walk around and trellises, without interfering (literally!) with his hobby. I think I have an idea... just need to run it by him.

Beware of rampant rampicante
The only problem I can see with stringing an antenna on your trellis is you'll have to keep your vining plants from eating it. Your zucchino rampicante (sp?) might use it as an appetizer before turning to your house as the main course.

Hubby did say one of the issues would be weight, yes.
I am sleepily thinking about building a new trellis with the full 10 feet of conduit and arranging some sort of baffle (salvaged screen doors?) a foot or two down from the top to keep whatever from growing any further up.

baffled?
I suspect your plants would just grow around any type of baffle you rig up. You could keep them clipped as long as you were diligent about it.
I like the idea, though. I have no doubt you'll be able to figure something out to make it work. Maybe train the plants back down once they reach six or seven feet tall, or train them across, away from the tower.

Probably so. It's not an actual tower, just a delta loop. I just want to get it up high enough that I don't have to worry about clocking my head on it! It would be nice to incorporate the uprights into a trellis upright....one less thing to walk around.

The funny part about this is, camprn found it hysterical, whereas I gave ander's thought some sincere consideration.

I did a 10 foot trellis last year for my beans, and the beans still grew beyond the top. In the end I had to tip the trellis and prop it with a pole, like an A frame.
This year I am going to try the arched cattle or hog panel.

Sure hope that lone seed didn't fall out into some unsuspecting neighbor's yard on the mailman's rounds!
