Kay,

That's a prob, Lettuce doesn't like heat or dry. Can they find a cool place for a pale green variety and put a shade casting plant or light reflecting cover by it and water with cold water? Thatched roof for lettuce I was thinking after remembering they put thatch over the water container to keep it cooler. Thinking out loud.

Next crop is black seeded simpson, bringing the shade cloth lower and heavier watering. See my thread "lettuce WILL grow in the Philippines" for what can be accomplished.

Vermiculite

Post  dikster on 5/9/2011, 11:22 am

walshevak,

After an extensive and exhausted search, I just found a supplier of Vermiculite in the Philippines. I am conducting a sample buy to see the product. They claimed that the vermiculite is the coarse grade. Will let you know as soon I will find the coarse grade items.

Nice to have you join us. Also nice to have someone to be able to compare walshevak's extended family's results with yours.

Have you SFG'ed before? Hope you enjoy the experience.

Again, Welcome!

I lived in the PI for about 5 years.... I was just a kid. Loved it! Anyway... I remember growing peanuts and hot peppers. The peppers were by the back door, the peanuts were under my bedroom window. Hadn't thought of that in years. Smile AND, I don't miss the snakes. At all. OH... and a neighbor grew tomatoes by the bushel. He had so many he let us kids have some to feed the bats. We'd break them up into pieces, stand under the streetlights at night and toss bits in the air... the bats would catch them. Great fun!

They couldn't get the lettuce or tomatos to grow, but kale did very well.
