New From SW Ohio

Post  JACC0811 on 2/25/2011, 2:25 am

Hello! I'm John from Centerville (Dayton), OH.

Just bought the All New SFG book about a week ago and starting to plan a garden design and seed/plant selection when I get frames built. I hope to build them soon since the last day of frost is coming quick.

I'm planning on building about 6-12 frames, I just don't want to do too much that I can't deal with my first year at SFG.

Wish me luck, lol!

Welcome from South Dakota! I bought the All New SGF in January and it didn't take long to get me hooked either. I have the boards for building my 8 boxes and have 3 trellis frames already put together in my dining room, but alas, snow still buries my beds!

You will find lots of help and encouragement here! Congrats on last frost date rapidly approaching - keep us posted on your garden and remember:

WE LOVE PICTURES!

TC

Thanks for joining us. Planning your garden design and seed/plant selection is half the fun!
6 - 12 frames is very ambitious! Once the frames are built and filled with Mel's Mix, the hard work is done. After that you can plant your seeds and transplants, nurture and harvest.

Best of Luck to you, and please keep us updated on your progress. We I love you pictures.

Feel free to ask questions when you have them. There is lots of information available by checking the various forums, but if you still have questions, we have members willing to help.

Again, Welcome.

Thank you for the Welcomes!

If it would stop raining long enough, I could get to where I want to put the boxes, lol. I'm hoping to get some materials this weekend and get started.

Welcome, John! glad you\'re here

Wow, 6-12 boxes is going to make a huge, beautiful garden. Let us know how your planning goes...I think you'll find you will have ample space to grow just about anything, especially when you count in succession planting. Planning is such great fun!

The GREAT thing (well, one of them!) about SFG is that once the construction is done, all the real work is over and you can sit back and enjoy your garden.

Welcome to the forum, John.

This is our second year of SFG after many years of row gardening. We'll never go back to the old way.

Get your Mel's Mix right from the beginning to save yourself headaches later on. (The voice of experience.)

Let us know how your garden grows.

Not the best picture, but I wanted to post something to show where I will be locating my SFG. The best place I think that's out of the way, not over septic lines and close to water is in front of our barn. It is about 150' from the house. We have 3.5 acres of pasture, but it's too far from the house and we haven't mowed since last spring lol. We don't own horses, although I wish we did for fuel-less lawn mowers and a source for manure lol.

Thanks!

So, I've been thinking and since I'm not sure when we'll move/build, I'm going to start small and build frames for either 2 4'x4' or 4'x6' boxes. I decided to go much smaller than originally planned because after a trip to Tractor Supply, I might get into raising chickens and would need time/space for them. I figure that they will not only be a good source for fresh eggs and eventually meat, they would also produce a good addition to my compost. Plus, it would be a good thing for my kids to get into and possibly get involved in 4H later on. They are 4 and 2 this year, so I have a little time to get things established.

Mel recommends that you start out small anyway. If you are considering chickens too, it is a lot to undertake at the same time.

We have several forum members with chickens. Check out the threads and you may find some interesting stuff.
