Sounds like that is a good find. We have several members in FL, and they may be able to use that information.

We are glad that you joined us and hope you will keep us updated on your progess with your SFG. We I love you pictures.

Great news!

Post  Jeff Buffington on 3/2/2011, 10:48 am

I've been off the site for a while... (happy anniversary to the forums, BTW What a Face )...

Since then, my wife and I have taken over her Mom's house... and now I'm up in Orange County, and looking for local sources!

Don't suppose anyone has a source more centrally located than Apopka (say in Orlando/South Orange)?

Since we've moved, I now have to build all new raised beds... but at least I own the land it'll be on! Very Happy

WB, Jeff. I forget: was it your MIL's house that had the sunroom/porch or your old house? Will it work for SFG? I hope you stick around longer this year!

Jeff, sorry but I don't know anything about where different cities are in FL. Did you get a chance to look at the Vermiculite Data base? There are several FL retailers listed as sources for vermiculite. Take a look and see if any of these are closer to you.

Hey! Long time. Been dealing with a lot of family issues over the past year. My Dad passed away right after we moved up here, and my MIL is still dealing with rehab and other medical issues, not to mention my change in employers and my wife's promotion. So a mix of both bad and good.

MIL's house has an atrium... the 'house' is actually half of a duplex, but it's basically a typical 3/2 house with a zero-lot-line on one side. We also have a decent sized screened in porch (one of the reasons the back yard is so small.)

I'm not sure if enough direct light gets in there for most of the veggies I like to grow. Perhaps herbs and stuff? Also thinking about finding some sort of sun screening for the atrium; it used to have some before Charlie/Frances/Jeanne blew through. I'm sure as the sun goes higher into the sky, it will get more and more light; of course, if I screen it that will affect the amount of light as well. Right now, it's basically an unused, ceiling-less room, exposed to the elements, consisting of nothing but a bed of rocks.

I did pick up a couple of fig trees, Roebelini palms, hibiscus, crotons and cordylines to spruce up the front yard and flowerbed (another formerly barren bed of white rocks.) The only two 'trees' she had were Sago palms, and they had been neglected (infected with scale), and nearly all the other plants have long since died off.

Up next is the back/rear-side yard area. I'm not sure what the HOA will allow me to put up in the way of a fence, or where for that matter. Suffice it to say, I do want one, and I am planning on building some new boxes. Unfortunately, I couldn't salvage the ones I had built at the old place in time.

Heh.. I remember when it was still in the testing phase. I did check, but it looks like the Apopka location is the closest thus far. I thought there was a place somewhere here in Orlando that carried it, but didn't see it on the list.

I'm so used to seeing throngs of people from out of state (and even foreigners), it's almost mind blowing to realize that there are people who haven't been here yet... Smile
