March 2011 Updates

Post  Jiro on 2/26/2011, 9:49 pm

Spent the day moving and preparing the raised bed and preparing this year's expansions. Where's everybody at in their 2011 gardening? What are you planning to plant, what have you started, etc? And what lessons from 2010 are you taking into account this year?

Me? 2010's big winners (based on yield and consumption by the family) were lettuce, peas, green beans, and radishes. The losers were carrots, ground cherries, and bell peppers. Lessons from last year: plant more tomatoes. Worst lesson from last year: I remembered why I don't like swiss chard.

Saddest news from 2010: my favorite composts are no longer being made. Chesapeake Blue and Chesapeake Green, made from composted crab shells, chicken feathers, chicken manure, and sawdust. I just secured the last bags I could find. pale Does anybody know of anything similar?

This year, I'm focusing on providing food for the table and hopefully making a dent in our grocery bills, so it's heavy on what we eat: lettuce, spinach, peas, green beans, onions, and tomatoes. With herbs and fruit planted outside of the SFGs in containers and mixed into traditional flower beds.

Have my first wave of seeds starting and though I love winter and freezing weather, I am officially psyched for Spring.
