Hi ya from the UK

Post  Devondigger on 3/20/2010, 6:41 am

Hi Folks

Thought I’d better say Hi and give you a little of my history, Great new lookin site here.

I started SFG early 2009, My better half suggested one day before she went to work that I take a look at the SFG website. By the time she got home I had viewed loads of videos on Youtube and planned my first Garden Box. Shortly after we bought the book.

I wanted to start out BIG, we had an area of Decking to the front of our house that we rarely used, it could have taken a 3*8 foot box and also a 2*6 foot in an ‘L’.

It was suggested I down size my plan a little and try with a 3*3 Box, being a bit handy with a drill & a saw I got some 6inch*1inch gravel boards and over engineered it a bit, 3*3 posts as it was raised off the decking 12’ deep and even has a semi-permanent cover.

Like many in the UK Vermiculite(Micafil) did seem to be a bit expensive until i discovered at a local Builders Merchant sells 100L bag's for about £10.

If I recall we successfully grew the following:-

Carrots, loads of Beetroot, Little Gem Lettuce, Onions, Potato’s, Parsnips, leeks, Radish’s, Mange Tout, Peas, Leaf salad, Perpetual spinach, Tomato’s and a few other bits.

Well 2010 things have moved on a little, we still have our 3*3 box, refreshed for the New season already has Spring Onions, Onion Sets and carrots.

I have recently just made a New box to the back of the house, a 9*3 foot 12inch deep. This has been filled with more MIX and is already having a showing 5 of 9 Cos lettuces.

We’ve purchased a number of unusual seed packs to us for this year including pruple carrots, Strawberry popping corn, watermelon and celery. I have already started a number of seeds indoors, Toms, Cucumber. I also have some bags for potato’s that are about to go in so I had better stop waffling and get planting.

Hope everyone has a successful year. Lookin forward to a bumper crop, more news as it Grows.

Mike

Howdy Mike:

I sounds like you had a very successful first year and you are well on your way to another. I have found Square Foot Gardening to be the easiest way to garden ever invented and just love it. Have you shown off your garden to others? I bet if you became a SFG instructor you would find a ready market for classes. Give it some thought and let us know. We need more instructors in the U.K. and Europe.

God Bless, Ward.

My family is from England.... Harlow, Essex to be exact (I'm first generation born outside of England).
