Errol, we are so happy to have you join our forum. While I am not from your region, I would like to welcome you here. I am from central British Columbia in Canada. We are always happy to have new members. There are a lot of friendly, helpful people on here who are willing to answer your questions or tell you what to do and where to go.... Laughing...only in a nice, helpful way of course since this is a family type forum.

What are you growing for cool crops?

Gwynn, I am growing right now, red leaf lettuce, radish's, broccoli, mustard greens, onions, romaine lettuce, cabbage, potatoes. Last night I did put a plastic cover over the bed since temps got down to 28 degrees. but it has been rather mild temps the last couple weeks. So far everything seems to be doing great. I am just getting started in square foot gardening and seems like this is the way for myself to grow veggies.

Hello, Errol, and welcome to the forum and to SFG! glad you\'re here Sounds like some great veggies you have planned there. Those radishes will likely rocket out of the ground for you, they are so much fun to grow. I am growing mustard greens for the first time this spring, can't wait to see how they do.

Welcome to the forum, Errol. Hubby's aunt delivered mail for decades around Signal Mt. You live in a beautiful part of the country.

Keep us posted on how your garden grows, and remember that folks here are happy to help in any way they can.

thank you Ander for the nice welcome. Since I have woods around me on 2 sides I may have a little problem with squirrels. I have 5 that comes into the yard and feeds underneath the bird feeders. So far I have won the battle of them not getting on the feeders!!

Critters

Post  ander217 on 3/7/2011, 9:06 am

We also have woods bordering our property, and we have all sorts of critters, including squirrels, rabbits, groundhogs, lots of birds, and my Public Enemy Number One - voles.

The only problem we've had with squirrels is cutting our green pears off the tree. Rabbits and groundhogs have been more destructive in the garden, eating the lettuce, beets, and swiss chard down to the roots. But none could compare to the damage done by the burrowing voles who ate over a third of our potatoes and nearly half of our peas last year, as well as most of our sweet potato slips.

hello nickiefriend, we are neighbors!! this is also my 1st time at sfg also. I built my 1st just a couple weeks ago before I found this really nice forum with helpful information. I didnt at that time have all the information about what all went into the mm and why for it. but after joining this fourm I have learn much. there is a place in mcminnville called "mortons" and he has the large bag of virmiculite for $9.50 per bag and also has the best price around for all the rest of mels mix. so next week I will be building another sfg and it will have the MM in it! good luck to you and maybe we can exchange ideas.
