My spinach already bolted!

Post  jkahn2eb on 3/8/2011, 6:04 pm

It's my first time, haven't even plucked leaves off yet. From what I understand... it's over for this little guy. I have four other little guys this size. Should I move it all into the shade? There are three india mustards growing in this long trough as well..

I had a similar problem with my spinach seedlings in the house just this past week. I had planted seeds from last year that don't specify slo-bolt in the description and I guess I kept the seedlings too long in the house. I recently bought some slo-bolt varieties and will be starting those inside and out in the next few days.

I guess I'm happy I never planted those spinach seeds I bought. Got to looking at the temps it liked and thought "We'll never be that cool long enough for it to produce!"

Crazy. I have spinach plants that I have been harvesting from since Nov. and They still seem to be doing great and no bolting. It is planted in partial shade by the wall. My Nephew has some new ones in his garden in full sun. They also seem to be doing fine.
What kind of Spinach is it?

You know it seems like last year about this time someone from Texas was also complaining about his spinach bolting too early. I wish I could offer advise, but at least you can know that you're not alone in the world.

I planted Bloomsdale Long Standing which isn't the greatest in the heat but was hoping for a little longer. Got some Red Malabar which is more heat resistant. Will see what happens from here

spinach

Have you tried spinach as a fall crop? It might do better in really hot areas to wait and try it then.
