Prepped the beds today . . .

Post  Judge Kemp on 3/14/2011, 9:27 pm

Just prepped the beds today (here in Iowa) and added a little composted manure.

I also added blood meal and bone meal, as it was obvious last year that I simply didn't have the range of nutrients I needed in my Mel's mix I put together--just too much homogeneity in the composts I was able to pick up.

For those that have fertilized the mix in your SFG, did you find once a year at the beginning of the growing period was enough, or did you see a need to supplement with even more fertilizer later in the year?

I will be anxious to see what the others have to say. This is why I asked about compost tea. I figure it would supplement until I could get some more compost in there myself.

I only have one year of SFG under my belt...and my MM wasn't deficient really, but I used fish emulsion a couple of times and BOY HOWDY...that stuff was like Jack and Magic Beans..it just made such a beautiful difference. I also used blood and bone meal...and was happy with the results. I added thise things while I was growing during the summer, I didn't do anything when fall came...although this year I may prep my beds for winter and see what happens.
