I'm confused about compost....

Post  AngieMom on 3/20/2010, 8:53 pm

Okay.. It says I need 5 different types of compost. Does that mean I can by 1 well rounded compost with 5 or more ingredients & get the quantity I need? Or do I need to by 5 different bags with either 1 type or multiple types of ingredients to get a well rounded compost.
Today I ran all over Sonoma County getting 5 different compost blends to get the quantity I needed. But did I really need to go thru all that trouble.
BTW: Vermiculite was available at Harmony Farms & Friedman Brothers.

IMHO 5 different bags will get you a greater variety and blend of compost - especially if one of those five is the bag with five different ingredients. Wink
Yes, it's a bit of a pain collecting all the ingredients for Mel's Mix, but it is a one time deal. Next year you won't have anything to do - unless you decide to add more boxes to your SFG. Very Happy

It is a pain the first year. But unless the bag lists the percentages of the ingredients the 5 different ingredients could be 99% ingredient A, .2% ingredient B, etc etc.

Thanks -then I did it correctly. I purchased 4 bags of blended compost and ended up with one of a specific compost - so hopefully the mixing will work out well. We get to garden year round here as it is, so I just can't wait to maximize the space.

What price did you find on the vermiculite? I found it at Navelets but it seems expensive to me. 3.5 CF for $29.95 -- I haven't bought any yet because there is a rumor of a 10% off coupon in April. Still looking for a better deal.

I am collecting compost ingredients too. Just picking up bags as I find them. The best price I found for Peat Moss was at Lowes.

I paid $25.59 per 3.5 CF at Harmony Farms, and I believe it was about $29.95 at Friedman's for the same size

I've been purchasing it at Lowe's.

And if you see a bag that has a clear extra bag on it, or find one with a small leak, ask them for a salvage bag. You will get it 50% off.

How bout municipal compost?

Post  sansanity on 5/5/2010, 5:45 pm

I have used SonomaCompost in my garden with great success but have not tried it in the SFG. I would imagine that since it is the green waste collected to make the compost it would be very robust and might negate the need for me to get 5 different types? Plus it is alot cheaper than buying by the bag. What do you think?

AngieMom:

The Friedman Brothers Santa Rosa location is in the vermiculite database. If your Friedman Brothers it at a different location please add it to the V. DB.

Harmony Farms is not listed. Please list it in the DB so others may gain from your find.

Thanks and God Bless, Ward.

I bought 3 CF bags of vermiculite for $10.99 at Menards. They have plenty, sold as an attic insulation (it is pure vermiculite!).
