Hello from NW Ohio

Post  earthformed on 3/26/2011, 12:05 am

I just finished reading the All New Square Foot Gardening book and I am psyched about revamping the way I do gardening. Over the years I've applied certain methods Mr. Bartholomew teaches in his book, but never with the simplicity and elegance in which he presents them. The low cost and ease of implementation is what initially appealed to me. The promise of no tilling or amending other than turning over each square foot with a hand trowel and adding an extra trowel-full of compost seems amazing to me.

So far I have my garden measured, sketched and the materials list in hand. I need to pace myself though because as with many projects I tend to go overboard ;-). Spring is here and the gardening bug is calling Smile.

I understand your excitement. I am using Mel's Mix in Table Top Gardens this year. I was tired of fighting weeds and continually cultivating the soil.

Enjoy yourself! This is supposed to be fun and easy. We I love you pictures, so please share yours, and keep us updated on your progress. Feel free to ask questions and make comments if you like.

Welcome

Post  ander217 on 3/26/2011, 5:32 am

Welcome to the forum, Earthformed.

I am a former row gardener who has become addicted to SFG. My husband and I now get so much joy from gardening together. It used to be a chore, but not anymore.

It is a little expensive, IMO, for the initial set up if one must buy everything, but once the initial cost is over the boxes and mix last for years. We have several boxes filled with MM now, and we plan to convert a few of our raised beds over in years to come.

Keep us posted on how your garden grows, and remember that we love photos.

Welcome aboard!! I can tell you that I, too, tend to bite off more than I can chew when it comes to new projects. I think we all get like that when excited.....so much so Mel warnes against it...lol.

Pictures are worth 1000 words here, and the people are more than willing to help with any question crossing your mind. Hope to see you around often.
