4" of Snow in Dallas area

Post  timwardell on 3/21/2010, 10:43 am

This is what greeted me this morning:

That small hill that looks like a snow bank is 4" of snow covering my 3' x 24' x 1' SFG. This is Sunday morning. Friday the temperature hovered close to 70. Thankfully I got my plants covered.
This is what the same raised bed looked like the day before the snow hit:

Gotta' love the Texas weather. I do believe that today's snowfall makes this the snowiest in Dallas history. This was the 2nd most winter snowfall on record prior to this storm. Argh! I want to plant my tomatoes!

4" of Snow

Post  lindab on 3/21/2010, 1:41 pm

I agree...Texas weather is...well, changeable at best. My sympathies. I've lived in the Dallas area for virtually my entire life. Don't like the weather? I've been told you only need to wait a few minutes and it will change. At least you got everything covered up before it froze. And I can't blame you about the tomatoes. I"m only down Highway 380 from you, but we didn't get as much snow as you did. I just got home from church; the wind is still blowing like crazy, but almost all of the snow is gone.

Video: Texas Spring!

Post  timwardell on 3/21/2010, 8:21 pm

Supposedly the official first day of spring was yesterday.

There's a saying in Texas that if you don't like the weather just wait a few minutes and it will change. Yep. Sounds about right.

Crazy weather

Post  SirTravers on 3/22/2010, 1:42 am

I'm just west of the State line in Hobbs NM. Pretty much 30 miles west of Seminole TX. We got the cold temps....It was 25 this morning, but luckily the snow went just east of us. This kind of weather makes me want to put in a sun room on the back of the house and put a few SFG beds in there!

Tim -- my tomatoes and peppers are in, and came through fine with lot's of protective cover. SirTravers --a sun porch with SFGardens would be lovely -- until the 100 degree weather hits.

The snow missed us (160 miles W of Dallas), but we did get some sleet, low temps, and wind gusts to 45. Wind chill in the low 20's. I felt a bit foolish dressed in shorts and t-shirt covering everything Fri evening, but was so glad I heeded the warnings when Saturday didn't get above 35. But today is predicted to be in the 70's, so back to normal -- or what passes as normal around here.

Hope everything came through OK for you , Tim.
